WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary baseball team provided plenty of offensive fireworks in claiming its fourth straight home win against Virginia Tech, 19-10, on Wednesday evening. The triumph over the ACC program advances the Tribe to 7-5, while the Hokies fall to 9-6.
Eight of the Tribe's nine starters picked up at least one hit, scored one run and picked up an RBI, while four different Green and Gold players tallied three hits and six scored at least two runs. Senior
Ryder Miconi led W&M with four hits, including three of the extra base variety. He had six RBI on two doubles and a home run. Junior
Ryan Hall was 3-for-3 at the plate, reaching in all six of his plate appearances and accounted for seven Tribe runs with five scored and two driven in. Sophomore
Hunter Smith registered three hits and four RBI, while freshman
Matthew Trehub tallied three hits, including two doubles, to go along with four runs scored and an RBI.
Virginia Tech put runs on the board in the first inning thanks to a pair of free bases to start the inning. Jack Owens and Ryan Tufts start the inning with a walk and hit-by-pitch, respectively. Owens came around to score on a Sam Fragale single up the middle, while Tufts scored on a Nick Anderson fielder's choice. The Green and Gold defense cut down a third run as the combination of
Charles Ameer and
Kyle Wrighte threw out Anderson at the plate on a JD Mundy double off the left-center field wall.
The Tribe batted around in the bottom of the frame, answering with five runs. After
Ryan Hall led off the inning with a walk, senior
Ryder Miconi set W&M up with runners on second and third and no outs.
Cullen Large worked a four-pitch walk, and Hall trotted home on a wild pitch. A
Hunter Smith slow roller turned infield single plated Miconi to tie the game at two apiece.
Ameer blasted a one-hop double off the center-field wall to score Large and give the Tribe a 3-2 lead.
Patrick Ryan and Wrighte added RBIs in the inning with a ground out to the right side and a single up the middle, respectively, pushing W&M's advantage to 5-2 at the end of one.
Miconi padded the Green and Gold cushion in the bottom of the second with a blast. Following a Hall single through the left of the infield, Miconi launched a tower shot to left field for a two-run home run. It was the first of the season for the Tribe senior and the fifth of his W&M career.
Owns and Tufts singled and doubled to lead off the third for Virginia Tech. Tom Stoffel and Fragale plated the Hokies third and fourth runs of the game with a ground out to first and a single up the middle, respectively, to close the gap to 7-4. The Tribe ended the frame with a nifty glove work up the middle. Large fielded a Anderson bouncer up the middle, ranging to his right and flipped to Wrighte, who easily turned the 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.
Virginia Tech added two more runs in the fourth to pull within 7-6. After Mundy led off the inning and Joe Freiday, Jr., reached on a hit by pitch, Garrett Hudson moved both runners up 90 feet with a sacrifice bunt. Munday scored on a Rahiem Cooper sacrifice fly down the right field line, and Freiday trotted home of a soft line-drive single to left by Owens.
The Tribe pushed the lead back to two runs in the bottom of the inning. Freshman
Matthew Trehub led off the inning with a bloop double to right field and moved over to third on a Hall single to right field. Miconi drove in his third run of the game with a grounder to second that the Hokies looked to turn two on, but the ball was bobbled Owens, allowing all the runner to move up safely.
A Mundy three-run home run in the top of the fifth gave Virginia Tech the lead. Fragle and Anderson started the inning off reaching on back-to-back hit by pitches. Mundy lifted one to the opposite field just to the left of the scoreboard, giving the visitors a 9-8 advantage.
The Tribe answered with five runs in the bottom of the fifth. After Virginia Tech retired the first hitter of the inning, Ryan reached on a HBP, moved up to second on a wild pitch and over to third on a Wrighte single to center. With Wright moving on the pitch, Trehub singled through the vacated hole on the right side to score Ryan and tie the game at nine. Wrighte scored on balk, and Trehub followed him home on a Miconi ground out. After a Large hit by pitch, Smith cleared the bases with a two-run double off the left-center field wall to increase the Tribe lead to 13-9.
A little two-out magic plated three runs for the Green and Gold in the bottom of the sixth. Ameer led off the inning with a single, before the Hokies retired the next two W&M batters. Trehub pick up his third hit in as many inning doubling off the right field wall to give W&M runners at second and third. Hall lined a single to left center field to plate both runs. After a Miconi single put runners at the corner, Large doubled into the right field corner to bring home Hall. Unfortunately, Miconi was cut down at the plate to end the inning with the Tribe on top 16-9.
Virginia Tech added a run in the seventh on a sac fly, ending a stretch of eight in a row for the Tribe. The Hokies loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a single to right from Hudson. Cooper picked up his second sac fly of the game, plating Mundy to draw Tech to within 16-10.
A walk, a HBP and a single from Mac Caples loaded the bases with one out in the top of the eighth. The Tribe defense came up big with its second double play of the night.
Charlie Fletcher induced a Mundy, who had homered earlier in the game, ground ball to second and the combination of Large and Wrighte turned the inning ending double play.
A Ryan single followed a Trehub walk and a Hall HBP loaded the bases in the bottom of the eight for the Tribe. Miconi delivered his third extra-base hit of the night, roping a double into the right field corner, plating Ryan and Trehub to increase the Tribe lead to 18-10. Smith tacked on another for the Green and Gold with a single to left, bring home Hall.
Freshman
Jamie Sara earned his collegiate win in relief. He pitched 2.1 innings, allowing just one run and striking out three. Freshman
Wade Strain went 3.1 inning, allowing six runs and six hits to go along with one strike out in his first career start. Junior
Charlie Fletcher and
Robert White pitched final 1.2 scoreless innings. On the other side, Culver Hughes stated and pitched 3.1 innings, allowing eight runs on eight hits, while striking out five. Dylan Hall took the loss, giving up four runs in an inning of work.
The Tribe hosts three more games at Plumeri Park this weekend against St. Joseph's and Yale. W&M welcomes the Hawks to Williamsburg on Friday, March 10, at 6 p.m., before facing Yale on Saturday, March 11, and Sunday, March 12, at 4 p.m., and 1 p.m., respectively.
