Women's Tennis Edged at Brown, 4-3

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The William & Mary women's tennis team suffered a narrow 4-3 setback at Brown on Saturday afternoon. The Green and Gold (7-9) captured the doubles point for the second-straight match and received singles wins from freshmen Natalia Perry and Rosie Cheng. Unfortunately, the Bears (8-4) won four singles matches, including a pair in three sets, to take the victory.
 
The Green and Gold won at the top two doubles spots to claim a 1-0 lead. Senior Marie Faure and sophomore Lauren Goodman tallied their sixth-straight win at No. 1, upending Alyza Benotto and Dayna Lord, 6-3. The Brown pair entered the match at 19-3 overall, including 9-1 at No. 1, while Faure and Goodman improved to 11-5 on the year and 8-2 at the top spot. Juniors Ekaterina Stepanova and Olivia Thaler won for the fourth time in the last six matches at No. 2 to clinch the point. The Tribe pair topped Taylor Cosme and Mariska Chamdani, 6-3.
 
Perry rallied for a three-set win at the No. 3 singles position, her first win at the spot. Maddie Stearns won the opening set, 6-3, before the Tribe rookie won the second, 6-4, and then claimed the match with a 6-3 victory in the third. Perry improved to 16-12 on the year.
 
Cheng continued her winning efforts in singles action. The Tribe freshman downed Juliana Simon in straight-sets, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 5 for her sixth-straight victory. Cheng improved to 12-8 overall and 8-3 in dual-match play, including a 4-2 ledger at the fifth spot.
 
Brown's Dayna Lord picked up a three-set win, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, over Stepanova at No. 1, while Taylor Cosme outlasted Goodman in three-sets at No. 4, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (2). The Bears' Mariska Chamdani clinched the team triumph with a narrow 6-4, 7-5 win over junior Maria Groener at No. 6.
 
The Tribe continues its two-match Ivy League road swing at Harvard on Sunday, March 26. The contest carries an 11:30 a.m. start time. The Crimson have won 12 of their last 13 matches, including eight straight, to sit at 12-5 on the year.
