Tribe Lax Concludes Non-Conference Slate with 12-8 Loss to Richmond

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (March 25, 2017)—The William & Mary lacrosse team concluded its non-conference slate with a 12-8 setback against Richmond at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field on Saturday afternoon.

Although W&M (3-8) led 7-5 midway through the second half, UR (5-3) closed the game with a 7-1 run during the final 16:13 to secure the victory.

Prior to the Spiders' game-closing run, neither team had built a lead of more than two goals.

Senior Lindsey Jenks led W&M with five points (4g, 1a), while sophomore Holly Hager added two goals. Junior Abby Corkum and freshman Meredith Hughes also found the back of the cage, while Hughes also posted three draw controls and a career-high four ground balls.

Senior Abby Junior led the Tribe defensively with three caused turnovers, while senior goalie Alex Lista totaled eight saves and allowed just four goals during the first half.

W&M outshot UR, 36-28, and held advantages in draw controls (14-8) and ground balls (21-19).

The contest was a defensive struggle for much of the first half as the teams combined to score just nine goals during the opening 30 minutes.

W&M's only two scores in the opening 20 minutes came on goals by Hager, as Richmond owned a narrow 3-2 advantage. However, W&M rattled off a 3-0 burst with goals by Jenks (9:14, 6:11) and Corkum (7:54) to build a 5-3 advantage before heading to the locker room with a one-goal edge.

While the Green & Gold held UR to just one goal during the initial 13:46 of the second half and led 7-5, the Spiders closed the game with a 7-1 run. W&M's lone goal during the stretch came by Jenks with 14:40 remaining.

Natalia Chaney and Marissa Brown led Richmond with five goals apiece.

The Tribe will return to action when it opens conference play at No. 12 Towson on April 7.
