WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (March 20, 2017)—Legendary William & Mary football head coach
Jimmye Laycock will be honored with the 2017 Norfolk Sports Club Lifetime Achievement Award at the organization's 72nd Annual Jamboree on Wednesday evening.
The event will be held at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott and begins at 6:30 p.m.
Ticket information is available here or by calling 757-497-3095.
Previous winners of the award include Frank Beamer, Curtis Strange and Darrell Green, among others.
One of the most successful head coaches in the history of college football, Laycock will enter his 38th season at the helm of W&M's program this fall ranked second among current D-I head coaches (FCS and FBS) in career victories (243). Additionally, he ranks second all-time among conference head coaches in league wins (109).
Individual accomplishments under Laycock have been plentiful, as he has helped 44 players earn 125 All-America honors at W&M and coached 11 Academic All-Americans. Additionally, the Tribe is well represented in the pro ranks, as seven former Tribe players are currently on NFL rosters: Jerome Couplin III (Los Angeles Rams), Jonathan Grimes (Houston Texans), DeAndre Houston-Carson (Chicago Bears), Sean Lissemore (San Diego Chargers), Tre McBride (Tennessee Titans), Luke Rhodes (Indianapolis Colts) and B.W. Webb (Tennessee Titans).
Since 2009, W&M has produced six NFL Draft picks - a figure that leads the CAA and ranks second nationally in the FCS. Additionally, the impressive total ranks third in the state of Virginia (behind only Virginia and Virginia Tech).
In addition to producing a number of professional standouts, a number of Laycock's former players have gone on to accomplish tremendous success as NFL coaches. The most prominent of those are Mike Tomlin ('95), who became the youngest head coach to win a Super Bowl in NFL history when he guided the Pittsburgh Steelers to the title in 2009, and Sean McDermott ('98), who was hired as the Buffalo Bills head coach this January.
