WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (March 18, 2017)—The William & Mary men's gymnastics team concluded its regular-season slate by posting a season-high 401.6 en route to defeating Army (393.55) and Temple (375.7) on Senior Day at Kaplan Arena.
In addition to totaling the top team score in five events, W&M recorded a season-best on floor (68.6) and equaled its best mark of the year on vault (70.55).
Highlighting the Tribe's individual performances were four standouts who claimed event titles – freshman
Tomas Palma (floor – 14.15), sophomore
Jacopo Gliozzi (pommel horse – 14.2), senior
Rob Meyer (rings – 13.9) and junior
Griffin Antle (parallel bars – 13.9). Additionally, senior
Aria Sabbagh won the all-around title with a 78.2.
W&M opened the meet on floor with its best score of the season in the event (68.6), as Palma (14.15) and senior
Neal Courter (14.1) earned the top two individual marks. Palma's impressive total represents a career high and ranks tied for eighth in W&M's record book, while Courter's effort set his season high in the event.
Tribe gymnasts secured the top three scores on pommel horse, as Gliozzi (14.2), Meyer (13.3) and Antle (13.2) helped the squad total a 66.25.
Meyer's winning score of 13.9 on rings equaled a career high and tied for the seventh-best mark in school history in the event. Junior
Jeremiah McReynolds (13.8) also came up big and placed third to help W&M register a 67.2.
A quartet of Tribe gymnasts turned in outstanding efforts on vault, as the squad matched its best score of the season in the event (70.55). Freshman
Tim O'Neill (14.3) and Courter (14.2) placed second and third, respectively, while senior
Nick Van Dyke and junior
Juan Palma both contributed to the team total with a pair of 14.15's.
Antle (13.9, career high) and Meyer (13.8) posted the meet's top two scores on parallel bars, as the Green & Gold registered a 65.85 in the event.
W&M closed the meet on high bar with a 63.15, as junior
Mitchell Campbell led the way with a third-place finish (13.1).
The Tribe will begin the postseason portion of its schedule next weekend when it competes at the USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships in Seattle, Wash.
