WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Sophomore
Bodie Sheehan twirled another gem as the William & Mary baseball team took the weekend series from Rhode Island with a 7-3 victory on Saturday afternoon at Plumeri Park. With the win, the Tribe improves to 11-7, while the Rams drop to 6-10.
Sheehan tossed 6.2 innings in his fourth win of the season. He allowed just one run on four hits, while he equaled his career-high with 11 strikeouts for the second time this year.
Offensively, junior
Cullen Large and
Ryan Hall as well as freshman
Brandon Raquet each collected two hits. Hall,
Brandon Raquet, and sophomore
Hunter Smith each drove in two runs, while Large extended his hitting streak to 16 games.
William & Mary started the day's offense thanks to a pair homers in the bottom of the second inning. Smith led off the inning with his first blast of the season over the left field wall. After an out, senior
Charles Ameer lifted his fourth homer of the year to nearly the same spot over the left field wall.
The Tribe added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore
Kyle Wrighte led off the inning with a double to left field. Hall followed suit with a single, bringing home the first run of the inning. Large followed with a single, but a fielder's choice put runners on the corners with one out. The next batter, Smith flew out to center, but it was enough to make it 4-0.
W&M went right back to work in the bottom of the fourth inning adding another run. Ameer led off the frame with a single, before moving to second on groundout. Sophomore
Zach Pearson walked to put runners on first and second. After the second out, Hall singled scoring Ameer.
Rhode Island got on the board with a run in the top of the fifth inning. Mike Foley led of the inning with a solo shot over the left field wall, cutting the Tribe lead to 5-1.
The Tribe tacked on two more in the bottom of the seventh inning. Large started the rally with a one-out single, before a two-out walk to Smith putt runners on first and second.
Brandon Raquet cleared the bases with a triple giving W&M a 7-1 advantage.
URI didn't go quietly and added two runs in the top of the eighth inning. Jordan Powell led off the inning with a double. After an out, Matt O'Neil singled to center scoring Powell. A walk to Justin Jewell and a single by Brett McManus loaded the bases. Foley flew out to center, which was enough to make it 7-3.
Junior
Robert White was credit with his fourth save of the season, pitching 1.1 innings, including getting out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the eighth. He allowed two walks, while striking out a pair.
Matt Murphy was saddled with his second loss of the season. He went 3.2 innings allowing five runs on seven hits with a strikeout. Powell led the Rams offense with three hits, while Foley had a pair of RBI.
The Green and Gold goes for the series sweep tomorrow, Sunday, March 19. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
