Tribe Lax Edged at ODU, 13-10

NORFOLK, Va. (March 15, 2017)—Playing in its third consecutive road game, the William & Mary lacrosse team was edged at Old Dominion, 13-10, on Wednesday evening.
 
The Tribe (2-6) led by as many as four goals in the second half, but ODU (4-3) closed the game with a 7-1 run to secure the comeback non-conference win.
 
W&M owned a 14-10 advantage in draw controls but was edged in ground balls (24-22) and committed four more turnovers (24-20).
 
Junior Abby Corkum led the Green & Gold offensively with three goals, while senior Lindsey Jenks posted three points (2g, 1a) and a team-high four draw controls with two ground balls.
 
Senior Catherine Shaughnessy led the squad defensively with four caused turnovers and two ground balls, while senior Abby Junior added two caused turnovers, two ground balls and two draw controls.
 
While Jenks led the team in draws (4), freshman Meredith Hughes also played well and followed up her record-breaking performance at Cal (10 DC) with three draw controls versus the Lady Monarchs.
 
Although ODU jumped out to an early 2-1 lead about five minutes into the contest, W&M responded with four unanswered goals to lead, 5-2, midway through the opening half. Four different Tribe players scored during the run – Jenks (23:02), Hughes (22:25), junior Danielle Palmucci (21:41) and Corkum (14:41).
 
After more than 10 minutes went by with neither team scoring, both teams found the back of the cage twice in the final 4:30, as W&M led, 7-4, at halftime.
 
The Tribe struck first in the second half with a free position goal by junior McKinley Wade that extended the margin to 8-4.
 
However, ODU answered by scoring four of the next five goals to narrow the gap to just one, 9-8, midway through the half.
 
W&M briefly pushed the margin back to two, 10-8, with a goal by freshman Audrey Hoeg with 15:44 remaining, but the Lady Monarchs closed the game with a 5-0 run to pull away for the comeback victory.
 
ODU was led offensively by Katie Miller, who totaled a game-high six points (5g, 1a).
 
The Tribe will return to action when it travels to Virginia Tech on Saturday at 1 p.m.
