BLACKSBURG, Va. (March 18, 2017)—Playing in its fourth consecutive road game, the William & Mary lacrosse team fell at No. 18 Virginia Tech, 17-12, on Saturday afternoon.
The contest featured an 80-minute weather delay, as the matchup was moved to VT's indoor facility with 21:20 remaining in the second half.
Although the game was closely contested and VT (10-2) led by just two early in the second half, the Hokies pulled away with a 6-2 run midway through the final stanza en route to securing the non-conference win.
Senior
Lindsey Jenks led the Tribe (2-7) with three goals, while juniors
Danielle Palmucci (2g, 1a) and
McKinley Wade (2g, 1a) totaled three points apiece. Senior
Shannon Quinn also came up big with two goals, three draw controls, two ground balls and a caused turnover.
Junior
Cameron MacDonald totaled a career-high five draw controls with two caused turnovers, while freshman
Meredith Hughes added three draw controls.
W&M owned a 19-16 edge in ground balls and committed four fewer turnovers (14-18), but the Hokies outshot the Tribe (39-27) and held a 19-13 advantage in draw controls.
Although VT opened the game with three unanswered goals, W&M charged back by recording three of the next four scores to trail 4-3 with 17:54 showing. Jenks (22:24), Quinn (19:48) and Wade (17:54) provided goals during the stretch.
However, the Hokies responded with a 5-2 run that extended the margin to 8-4 with 5:31 left in the opening half.
W&M continued to charge back and answered with a 4-2 spurt to trail just 10-8 following a goal by Wade with 23:24 remaining.
It was as close as the Tribe would get, however, as VT broke the game open with a 6-2 run and built a 16-10 advantage with less than 10 minutes remaining.
Despite late goals by Palmucci and Jenks, the Tribe was unable to get closer than the final margin down the stretch.
Kristine Loscalzo led VT with four goals, while Marissa Davey added a game-high five points (3g, 2a) as just five players combined to account for 16 of the Hokies 17 goals. Tristan McGinley provided a game-high 10 draw controls.
The Tribe will return to action when it hosts Liberty at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
