Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Falls at Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The William & Mary women's basketball couldn't survive Hofstra's fourth quarter comeback, falling on the road 64-61 on Sunday afternoon. With the decision, the Tribe falls to 14-7, 4-6 in Colonial Athletic Association action, while the Pride improves to 9-12, 2-8 in league play.

Senior Alexandra Masaquel led three Tribe players in double-figures with 12 points, and just missed a double-double grabbing nine rebounds. Classmate Marlena Tremba added 11 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and a team-high three steals. Junior Jenna Green rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points, three rebounds, and five dimes.

Tied 6-6, W&M scored four straight points to take a 10-6 lead late in the first period. Boggs got a steal and a lay-up, before Masaquel converted a lay-up of her own.

Hofstra responded with a 5-0 run to close the first and open the second, building its first lead. Ana Hernandez-Gil drilled a triple with 27 seconds left in the first stanza, before Ashune Durant knocked down a jumper to make it 11-10 Pride early in the second quarter.

The Tribe came right back with a 6-0 spurt to regain the lead. Freshman Victoria Reynolds answered with a putback to restore the lead, before Masaquel and junior Abby Rendle had lay-ups forcing a Hofstra timeout and giving W&M a 16-11 lead with 7:19 left in the half.

After Hofstra cut the lead to 18-15, W&M reeled off four points in a row to take its largest lead of the first half. Two free throws from senior Latrice Hunter and a steal and lay-up from Tremba made it 22-15.

Despite shooting, 39.3-percent (11-of-28) and 1-7 from 3-point land, W&M held a 29-24 advantage at the break.

Leading 36-34, W&M used a 12-2 run to build a double-digit lead in the third quarter. Tremba opened the spurt with a triple, before Masaquel scored four in a row and Reynolds added a lay-up. After a Pride basket, Hunter canned a trey to make it 48-36 with 54 seconds left in the third.

W&M built its largest lead of the game at 52-39 with 9:47 left, but the Pride stormed back into the game. Trailing 54-44, Hofstra used an 18-4 lead to get its first lead since the second quarter.  Durant opened the rally with a traditional 3-point play, but W&M responded with a Masaquel lay-up. Durant connected on five straight points, including another and one, before Hernandez-Gil rolled a 3-pointer that cut it to one. After Tremba knocked home two from the stripe, Aleana Leon answered with two of her own, before a Krystal Luciano three-point play gave the Pride a 62-58 lead with 2:21 left.

Tremba responded with a toe-on-the-line jumper to cut the score to 62-60 and W&M got a stop and the ball back with 18 seconds left. Boggs drove the lane and put up a runner that was no good. However, Masquel skied for the rebound, but couldn't get her tipback to roll in.

Durant canned two free throws for the Pride, and Green went 1-for-2 trying to intentionally miss to seal the 64-61 final.

For the second straight game W&M won the rebounding battle, 37-33. It was the first time this season the Tribe has suffered a loss when winning the rebounding battle.

With her three blocks today, Rendle now has 201 career blocks and became the second Tribe player in school history to record more than 200 blocks. She is 55 rejections away from becoming the school's all-time leader. Additionally, Rendle becomes just the eighth player in CAA play to surpass the 200-block milestone.

Durant led the Pride with a game-high 23 points and finished with 11 rebounds for a double-double. Luciano scored 12 points and added eight assists, while Leone chipped in 10 points and three rebounds.

The Green and Gold and Hofstra tip it off again in just over 48 hours on Tuesday, Feb. 7 in a make-up game that was originally scheduled for Jan. 8. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
