WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Senior
Alexandra Masaquel tied a school record shooting a perfect 8-for-8 and scored a team-high 16 as William & Mary women's basketball topped Hofstra 81-65 on Tuesday night at Kaplan Arena. The win improved the Tribe to 15-7, 5-6 in Colonial Athletic Association action, while Pride drops to 9-13, 2-9 in league play.
Masaquel also added four rebounds and four assists as she led four Tribe players in double-figures. Senior
Marlena Tremba added 15 points on five made triples, while she grabbed three rebounds, three assists, and one steal. Junior
Abby Rendle added 14 points, grabbed four rebounds, added a career-high four helpers, and had two rejections. Sophomore
Bianca Boggs rounded out the double-figure scorers with 16 points, five rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and a steal.
W&M sprinted out of the gates with a 10-2 run, to build an early lead by the same score and never relinquished the lead. After a Hofstra free throw, Boggs drove through the lane for a lay-up, before Masaquel knocked down four points in a row. The Pride added another free throw, and Masaquel rallied off four more in a row, ending the run.
The Tribe dominated the second quarter, 32-15, and scored the most points in a 10 minute stretch this season. Leading by six, the Tribe used an 11-2 run to build a 15-point cushion. Junior
Jenna Green started the scoring with a jumper, before the Pride hit two free throws. The run restarted with a pair of Rendle freebies, a Rendle lay-up, and a Tremba 3-pointer to make it 27-12 with 5:31 left in the half.
After the Pride cut the deficit to 14, W&M spurted out on a 10-1 run to build its largest lead of the first half. Tremba sparked the rally with a 3-pointer, before Rendle added four straight points. After a Pride free throw, Tremba connected on another 3-ball to make it 44-21 with 51 seconds left.
Hofstra's Aleana Leon opened the second half with a traditional 3-point play, before the Green and Gold rallied off an 8-0 to take its largest lead of the evening. Masaquel opened the sequence with a jumper, before Tremba knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to make it 54-26 with 8:13 left in the third quarter.
W&M, to steal a line from Dan Patrick, was simple en fuego in the second and third quarter. The Tribe shot a combined 23-for-28 (82.1-percent) in the two quarters and scored 52 points.
Midway through the fourth quarter, the Pride used a 10-2 to run to cut the deficit to 12, which was the closest the game was since early in the second quarter. Krystal Luciano scored the first five points, before the Tribe answered with a senior
Kasey Curtis lay-up. Ashunae Durant scored four consecutive, before Sandra Dongmo added a lay-up and Luciano added to free throws to cut the lead 77-65 with 1:14 left.
Sophomore
Chandler Smith knocked down four straight from the free throw line to extend the Tribe's lead to the final score of 81-65. The sophomore also added a career-high and team-high five rebounds.
Luciano poured a game-high 18 points for Hofstra, adding six boards, three assists, and a steal. Durant chipped in 16 points, five rebounds, two assists, three blocks, and two steals. Marianne Kalin registered a career-high 16 points and had an assist, one block and two steals.
For the ninth time this season and the third consecutive time, the Tribe won the rebounding battle 31-29. W&M is 8-1 this season when they win the battle of the glass.
The Green and Gold get back to regularly scheduled programing with a pair of games this weekend. W&M heads to the City of Brotherly Love for a date with Drexel on Friday, Feb. 10. The College returns home to face Towson for its Pink Game on Sunday, Feb. 12. Tip times are scheduled for 7 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
