Defense Leads the Way as Women's Basketball Grinds Out Victory at James Madison

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Senior Marlena Tremba nearly registered a double-double as she led three W&M players in double-figures as the William & Mary women's basketball team picked up a 62-53 road win at James Madison on Sunday evening. With the victory, the Tribe improves to 18-10, 8-9 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while the Dukes fall to 21-7, 14-3 in league play.

Tremba scored 16 points and was a perfect 4-of-4 from the line to ice the game. Classmate Alexandra Masaquel finished a perfect 6-of-6 from the field and had 16 points, six rebounds, and four steals. Junior Jenna Green was the final Tribe player in double-figures with 12 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

After a back-and-forth first 10 minutes, James Madison closed the first stanza with four straight points. Logan Reynolds hit a lay-up, before Amber Porter connected on one of her to make it 16-12 after the period.

Trailing 18-14, W&M used an 8-0 run to reestablish its lead. Masaquel opened the rally with a lay-up, before Tremba scored four in a row to tie the score. Tremba added another bucket before Green had one to make it 22-18 with 4:49 left in the half.

JMU cut the lead to two twice, but the Tribe then used a 6-0 spurt to extend to its largest lead of the half. Tremba opened the rally with a 3-pointer, before Green canned one her own. The mini-run made the score 30-22 with 2:30 left.

W&M took a 31-26 lead into the locker room. The Tribe shot a 50-percent (14-for-28) from the floor in the first half, while they limited the Dukes to just 35.5-perccent (11-for-31).

After the Tribe took a seven-point lead, JMU responded with a 7-0 run to retie the score. Precious Hall and Hailee Barron started the spurt with back-to-back lay-ups. Hall then split a pair from the line, before Lexie Barrier tied the score at 35-35 with 4:36 left.

The teams traded blows down the stretch of the third quarter with neither team taking a lead by more than one possession. Freshman Victoria Reynolds hit a lay-up as the third quarter horn sounded to tie it 43-43.

Down by one, the Tribe defense held the Dukes scoreless for nearly the final seven minutes of the game allowing W&M's decisive run. Junior Abby Rendle gave the Tribe the lead for good on a jumper, before Green canned a triple. Tremba hit two from the line to push the lead to 55-49 with 45 seconds left.

JMU got back on the scoreboard with a Hall put-back that cut it to four, but the Tribe connected on 7-of-8 from the charity stripe down the stretch to extend its lead to double-figures. A JMU basket at the buzzer made the final score 62-53.

For the seventh time in the last eight games, W&M won the rebounding batting, 40-38. The Tribe improves to 13-3 when they win the battle of the glass. Tremba led the way with a season-high nine boards.

The victory was also W&M's eighth road win of the season, which ties the school record for road victories in a single-season It the first win at the Convocation Center since 1999. The 18 overall wins now sit one spot away from tying the second most in school history.

W&M, which has been a great perimeter defending team all season, limited the Dukes without a triple in the ball game. The Tribe held JMU 0-of-19 from range, which makes it five straight seasons with one game not allowing a triple in the first time since, Feb. 21, 2015 at College of Charleston.

Hall led a pair of Dukes with a double-double on 12 points and 11 rebounds. Amber Porter had 13 points off of the bench adding seven rebounds, two blocks, and two steals.

The Green and Gold conclude the regular season at home on Wednesday, March 1. W&M plays host to Drexel with tip time slated for 7 p.m.
