ROCK HILL, S.C. (Feb. 24, 2017)—The William & Mary
lacrosse team earned a convincing 19-9 victory at Winthrop on Friday afternoon.
The Tribe (1-2) jumped out to an early 5-1 lead and then utilized a 7-0 run during the second half en route to securing the impressive road win.
Junior
McKinley Wade equaled a career high with four goals, three of which came in the first half, to lead a contingent of 11 Tribe players who found the back of the cage.
Senior
Lindsey Jenks also posted a huge effort offensively with four points (3g, 1), while she (5) and senior
Abby Junior (6) combined to total 11 of W&M 18 draw controls. Junior's stat line also included two caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Also contributing to the outstanding offensive effort were freshman
Audrey Hoeg (2g, 1), junior
Abby Corkum (2g) and classmate
Alexandria Specht (2g), who all found the back of the cage multiple times.
Defensively, senior
Shannon Quinn posted a team-high three caused turnovers, while senior
Catherine Shaughnessy and junior
Danielle Palmucci tallied three ground balls apiece. Senior goalie
Alex Lista allowed just six goals in 48:53 and registered five saves.
As a team, W&M outshot Winthrop, 36-18, and owned an 18-12 advantage in draw controls.
The Tribe took control of the contest early, as it scored five of the game's first six goals to lead 5-1 midway through the first half.
After the teams traded scores on multiple occasions, the Tribe found the back of the cage twice in the final 1:17 to lead 9-4 at halftime.
Although Winthrop (1-2) tallied the first goal of the second half, W&M rattled off a 7-0 run to build a comfortable 16-5 lead.
The Eagles narrowed the margin to nine twice down the stretch but were unable to get any closer as the Tribe earned the lopsided win.
Nicole Beatson led Winthrop with five points (4g, 1a), while Katherin Judge totaled a game-high seven draw controls.
The Tribe will conclude its weekend road trip when it plays at Davidson on Sunday at 1 p.m.
