WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary women's basketball team celebrated Senior Day with a Friday night victory over UNCW, 58-52, inside Kaplan Arena. The Tribe's senior quartet of
Kasey Curtis,
Latrice Hunter,
Alexandra Masaquel and
Marlena Tremba accounted for 42 of the Tribe's 58 points and led the Tribe back from as much as a 12-point second quarter deficit. W&M improved to 17-10 overall and 7-9 in CAA play, while the Seahawks fell to 9-18 and 4-12 in league action.
Hunter tied a career-high with 17 points on 6-of-12 from the field, including 5-of-8 from three-point range. She added a trio of assists compared to zero turnovers and a pair of steals. Masaquel tallied her eighth double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds to go along with four assists and two blocked shots. Junior
Jenna Green chipped in nine points, including a huge three-pointer with 27.9 seconds remaining, and topped W&M with five assists.
W&M hit six of its first eight shots out of the gates, scoring the game's first 13 points. Masaquel (6) and Hunter (5) combined for the final 11 points of the spurt. Back-to-back Masaquel lay-ups put the home team on top 13-0 just four and a half minutes into the game.
UNCW caught fire to end the opening period, scoring 11 straight points to pull within two, 13-11, on a Madison Raque lay-up at the 2:23 mark. In total, the Seahawks hit eight of their final 10 shots in the opening 10 minutes to narrow the gap to 18-17 on Janea Williams in the closing seconds.
The Seahawks used a 13-0 run to open up its largest lead in the second quarter. Timber Tate (9) and Rebekah Banks (4) combined for all 13 UNCW points. Tate's third three-pointer of the sequence pushed the visitor's lead to 32-20 with 4:22 left in the quarter.
The Green and Gold answered with a run to end the half, scoring 13 of the final 15 points. W&M scored eight-straight points to cut the deficit to 32-28 on a Tremba fastbreak jumper at the 2:25 mark. Hunter (6) and Tremba (5) combined for 11 straight W&M points, before a Curtis putback with 52 seconds left closed the gap to halftime margin of 34-33.
W&M carried its first-half momentum into the third stanza, scoring 10 of period's first 12 points. Curtis scored the first four points out of the locker room to give W&M the lead. A Hunter triple from the right corner extended the cushion to 42-36 and forced a UNCW timeout with 6:13 left in the frame.
The Seahawks pulled within a single point late in the third quarter and early in the fourth. The latter on a Raque jumper just two minute into the final period. W&M came up with a big defensive play to quell the Seahawks rally. Masaquel made a big block on a driving lay-up attempt to start the Tribe on the break. Green fed back to Masaquel for an easy two in transition to push the lead to back three less than a minute later.
UNCW closed to within a point on two occasions over the final three minutes, but each time it was Green to the rescue. After Amber Reeves missed a three-point play opportunity at the 2:40 mark that would have tied the score, Green knocked down a pair of free throws to give W&M a three-point cushion.
The margin was again one after a Rebekah Banks lay-up at the 1:53 mark. Leading by one with less than a minute remaining, Green canned a 3-pointer from the right corner to put the game out of reach. Hunter found the junior for the triple to extend W&M's lead to four, 56-52, with just 27.9 seconds remaining.
W&M finished the game at 40 percent (22-of-55) from the field, while connecting on 7-of-16 (43.8 percent) from three-point range. W&M held a 38-34 advantage on the glass and dished out 15 assists on its 22 made field goals. Curtis added six points and six rebounds, while Tremba had five points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals on Senior Day. Sophomore
Bianca Boggs chipped six points and five rebounds off the bench for W&M.
Defensively, the Green and Gold limited UNCW to 26.7 percent (8-of-30) from the field in the second half. Overall the Seahawks shot 38.6 percent (22-of-57), including just 4-of-12 (33 percent) from three-point range. Banks finished with a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double, and Jenny DeGraaf added 10 points and six rebounds off the bench.
W&M hits the road for the final time in the regular season, traveling to instate foe James Madison on Sunday, Feb. 26. Tip-off from the JMU Convocation Center is set for 5 p.m., and the game will be televised on the American Sports Network.
