Maria Groener Upsets Nationally-Ranked Foe, but Women's Tennis Upended at N.C. State

RALEIGH, N.C. - The William & Mary women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision at N.C. State on Sunday afternoon. Junior Maria Groener led the way for the Tribe, picking a nationally-ranked singles win. The Wolfpack improved to 7-2 on the year, while W&M fell to 3-5.

After N.C. State claimed the doubles point with wins at the top two positions, the Tribe took a trio of singles matches to three sets. Groener picked up the lone Green and Gold win, upsetting No. 106-ranked Amanda Rebol at the No. 6 singles position. The players split 6-4 sets, before Groener outlasted Rebol, 10-7, in the third-set super tiebreaker. It marked Groener's sixth win of the year.

In doubles, the Tribe tandem of senior Marie Faure and junior Cecily Wuenscher was on the way to a win at No. 3, leading Rebol and Tayla Stenta, 5-3. Unfortunately, the match was on the abandoned after the Wolfpack clinched the doubles point with a close 6-4 win from Bianca Moldovan and Claudia Wiktorin over junior Olivia Thaler and sophomore Lauren Goodman at No. 2.

N.C. State clinched the team triumph with straight-set wins at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4. No. 31-ranked Martina Frantova defeated junior Ekaterina Stepanova, 6-4, 6-3, at the top post, while Adriana Reami iced the match with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Faure at the No. 3 position.

At No. 5, freshman Natalia Perry jumped out to a set advantage with a 6-2 win over N.C. State's Bianca Moldovan in the first. The Wolfpack sophomore responded with a 6-1 victory in the second set and then rallied past Perry in the third set, 6-4.

Goodman rallied from a set deficit to force a third-set super tiebreaker at the second spot. After Wiktorin claimed the first set, 6-3, the Tribe sophomore responded with a 6-4 triumph in the second. The Wolfpack player picked up the win in the third-set super tiebreaker, 10-4.

The Tribe returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 18, hosting Ivy League foe Dartmouth. The match is slated for a noon start at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
