Women's Basketball Tames Towson with Big Fourth Quarter

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary women's basketball team never trailed and outscored Towson 21-11 in the fourth quarter, picking up a 68-55 Colonial Athletic Association victory on Sunday afternoon at Kaplan Arena. The Tribe improves to 16-8, 6-7 in CAA play, while Towson drops to 11-13, 4-9 in league action.
 
Senior Marlena Tremba scored a game-high 17 points, while she added a rebound, four assists, and three steals leading three Tribe players in double-figures. Junior Abby Rendle chipped in 13 points and five rebounds, while she tied the single season school record with three blocked shots, moving her season total to 85. Classmate Jenna Green rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 points, two boards, six helpers, and a block.
 
The Tribe's 16 wins surpass the win total from each of the last two seasons, and are the most since the 2006-07 season. It is also tied for the third most victories in school history.
 
W&M sprinted out of the gates and took an early 5-0 lead and never relinquished the advantage. Green accounted for all five points, knocking down a 3-pointer to open the game and getting a lay-up in transition.
 
Leading by three, the Tribe used a 7-3 run to build its largest lead of the half. Junior Jeanne Gaumont started the run with a traditional 3-point play, but Towson answered with a triple. Sophomore Bianca Boggs connected on a jumper, before Gaumont knocked down two from the line to make it 15-8 with 3:18 left in the first.
 
Towson responded with 6-1 run to close the opening stanza. Maia Lee opened the spurt with a lay-up, before Sianni Martin got one herself. After a Tribe free throw, Mary Cuevas hit two of her own to make it 16-15 after one.
 
After a back and forth start to the second quarter, W&M used a 5-0 run to extend out to a 29-23 lead. Rendle opened the spurt with two free throws, before senior Latrice Hunter hit a triple.
 
Again the Tigers battled back to cut the lead to one, before the break with a 7-2 run. Jordyn Smith opened the run with a lay-up, before Raven Bankston hit a triple to cut it to one. W&M hit two free throws, but Towson got a lay-up from Cuevas right before the end of the half making it 31-30 at the break.
 
Leading 54-49, W&M used 12-2 run to build its largest lead of the game and seal the victory. Masaquel scored the first five points of the spurt to put the lead in double-digits. Towson responded with Shanea Butler jumper, but W&M closed with seven straight points. Tremba sparked the back half of the run by hitting a lay-up, before Masaquel knocked down two from the line and Boggs hit three straight from the line pushing the advantage to 66-51.
 
For the fifth straight game, W&M won the rebounding battle 38-35. The Tribe is now 10-2 when it wins the rebounding battles.
 
Boggs and Masaquel both just missed double-doubles for the game. Masaquel finished with eight points, 10 rebounds, a career-high six assists, one block, and a steal. Boggs had nine points, a season-high nine rebounds, one assist, and one block.
 
Cuevas led Towson with 12 points and eight rebounds, leading three Tigers in double-figures. Raven Bankston finished with 11 points an assist, and three steal. Sianni Martin finished with 10 points, three rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
 
W&M concludes its two-game homestand as they welcome College of Charleston to Kaplan Arena on Friday, Feb. 17. Tip time between the Tribe and Cougars is set for 7 p.m.
