Men's Basketball Wins Shootout over Marshall Behind Burchfield Record-Setting Night

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Behind a record-setting performance from senior guard Connor Burchfield, the William & Mary men's basketball team won a 114-104 shootout over Conference USA foe Marshall on Wednesday night at Kaplan Arena. Burchfield canned a school and Colonial Athletic Association record 10 3-pointers, including three in a row midway through second half to give W&M (4-2) a lead it would not relinquish.

The teams combined for a Kaplan Arena record 218 points, and the Tribe continued its hot shooting, connecting on 60 percent (42-of-70) from the field and 64.3 percent (18-of-28) beyond the 3-point arc. It was the Tribe's third-straight game of 60 percent or better from 3-point range. Burchfield highlighted the 3-point barrage with 30 points on 10-of-12 from deep. Sophomore Nathan Knight produced his second 30-point, 10-rebound double-double with 31 points and 12 rebounds.

After W&M opened up an 11-point cushion with the first two buckets of the second half, Marshall (4-3) hit nine of its first 10 shots in the final 20 minutes. The trio of Jon Elmore (8), Ajdin Penava (8) and C.J. Burks (7) combined for the Thundering Herds first 23 point in the second half. A pair of Elmore free throws at the 11:32 mark gave the visitors its largest lead of the contest at 77-69.

Knight scored the 12 of the Tribe's first 16 points in the second half, but it was Burchfield who turned it on to put the home team on top for good. He made back-to-back-to-back 3's to put W&M on top, before a Matt Milon fast-break lay-up capped an 11-0 Tribe run to force a Marshall timeout with 8:09 remaining and W&M leading 80-77.

Burchfield answered a Thundering Herd 3 with his ninth triple, and added the record-setting 10th at the 6:20 mark. W&M hit each of its final eight shots from the field, including four 3-pointers, and added a 9-of-10 effort from the free throw line in holding off a final 20 minutes from Marshall that featured Elmore's 26 points.

A back-and-forth first half saw the Tribe open up as much as an 11-point lead, 34-23, at the 8:32 thanks to an 11-0 run. Marshall pulled even at 41 on back-to-back Jarrod West 3-pointers just four minutes later thank to a 10-point spurt. The Tribe took a 51-44 lead in the locker room, scoring 10 of the half's final 13 points.
