Offensive Dominance Leads Men's Basketball to Road Win at Savannah State

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The William & Mary men's basketball team continued its torrid offensive pace on Saturday afternoon, rolling to a 108-85 win at Savannah State. The Tribe (5-2) shot a season-high 63.3 percent (38-of-60), its second-straight game of 60 percent, dished out 28 assists and knocked down 16 3-pointers in picking up its fourth win in a row. The 108 points are the most in a road game for the Tribe in school history.
 
The Green and Gold scored the game's first five points and never trailed. Despite some turnover issues, W&M connected on 10-straight field goal attempts in the middle stages of the first half, including a quartet of 3-pointers. The Tribe built a nine-point cushion thanks to three-straight dunks from sophomores Nathan Knight and Justin Pierce. The cushion reached as much as 16, 40-24, in the opening period on a David Cohn driving lay-up at the seven-minute mark.
 
Savannah State (3-7) drew within nine, 60-51, three minutes into the second half, but the Tribe responded with an eight-point spurt. After the home team again closed the gap to 12, 70-58, with 13:40 remaining, W&M put the game away with a 19-5 run. The Tribe built built its largest lead at 26, 89-63, over the six-minute stretch. Pierce (7) and Knight (6) combined for 13 of the Tribe's 19 points during the run.
 
Individual Player Spotlights
Senior guard Connor Burchfield scored 27 points to lead four Tribe players in double figures. He was 9-of-13 from the floor and 5-of-9 from 3-point range. Both sophomores Justin Pierce and Nathan Knight produced double-doubles. Pierce posted career-highs with 21 points, 17 rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots, while Knight finished with 18 points, 12 rebounds, seven blocked shots and four assists. Fellow sophomore Matt Milon added 18 points as well in the victory.
 
Javaris Jenkins led the Tigers with 20 points off the bench, hitting 5-of-10 form 3-point range. Alante Fenner added 17 points, five assists and four steals, while Zach Sellers chipped in 14 points and seven assists.
 
Inside the Numbers
- The Tribe shot better than 60 percent from the floor in both halves on the way to a season-high 63.3 percent (38-of-60). W&M connected on 64.5 percent (20-of-31) in the first half, before hitting at a 62.1-percent (18-of-29) clip in the final 20 minutes.
- W&M made 16 3-pointers against Savannah State, including 11 in the first half. The Tribe has connected on 15 or more 3-pointers in each of the last four games, averaging 17.3 per contest during that stretch. The Tigers also connected on 16 3-pointers, hitting 34.8 percent from distance.
- The Green and Gold dished out a season-high 28 assists, led by senior David Cohn's 11. W&M dished out 20 or more assists for the third time in the last four games, while Cohn tallied his third game of double-digit assists this season.
- The Tribe scored 100 points for the third time in the last four games and second contest in a row. It marks the second-straight season that W&M produced three 100-point games overall and accomplished the feat in back-to-back games, both equaling school records.

The Tribe's 108 points are the most the program has ever scored in a road game … It is the seventh-best single-game total for the program … W&M's 28 assists are the fourth most in school history … The Green and Gold connected on 16 3-pointers which is tied for the fifth-best single-game total in program lore … The Tribe has scored 100 or more points in six games the last two seasons … W&M blocked a season-high 11 shots, which ranks ninth in school history … Justin Pierce's 17 rebounds are the fourth most for a Tribe player since 1973 … Nathan Knight tied a career-high with seven blocked shots, which is the fourth-best single-game total in W&M history … Knight is one of just two players, along with David Cully to block seven or more shots in a game in Tribe annals … David Cohn posted his third game of double-digit assists over the last four contests and eighth of his career … Both are W&M school records … His 11 assists are the sixth-best single-game total for a Tribe player.
