Hot-Shooting First Half Leads Women’s Basketball to 70-49 Victory over Loyola

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Behind a hot shooting first half, the William & Mary women's basketball team rolled to a 70-49 win over Loyola (Md.) on Saturday evening at Kaplan Arena. The Green and Gold connected on 62.1 percent (18-of-29) in the opening 20 minutes and led by 21 points over the Greyhounds (2-4) at the intermission on the way to a 4-1 start to the year for the third-straight campaign.
 
The Tribe jumped quick on the Greyhounds, hitting nine of its first 12 shots from the floor, including a its first three to take a 7-0 lead less than two minutes into the contest. Junior Bianca Boggs sparked a 13-1 spurt with five-straight points, including a triple, before finding classmate Chandler Smith for a deuce. Sophomore Misha Jones knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers extending the Green and Gold cushion to 22-6 with 1:51 left in the opening quarter. 
 
W&M continued its hot shooting in the second quarter, using a 10-0 run to extend the margin above 20. Four different Green and Gold players scored during the run, including triples from seniors Jeanne Gaumont and Jenna Green. Sophomore Nari Garner knocked down all four of her second-quarter shots to help the home side to a 42-21 advantage the break.
 
The Greyhounds twice drew within 14 points in the third quarter thanks to CaLee Gelbaugh. The final time came at 48-34 on a pair of free throws midway through the third quarter. The Tribe answered with five straight, including a Green 3-pointer, as part of a 12-3 spurt to push the lead to the largest at 60-37 on a Green lay-up at the 2:30 mark.
 
Individual Player Spotlights
Sophomore Victoria Reynolds led four Tribe players in double figures with 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting to go along with seven rebounds. Senior Abby Rendle just missed her second-straight triple double finished with 10 points, nine rebounds and seven blocked shots. Junior Bianca Boggs (11) and senior Jenna Green (10) rounded out the Tribe double-digits scorers, while Green added a game-high seven assists.
 
For Loyola, CaLee Gelbaugh led two Greyhounds in double digits with 13 points on 5-of-10 from the floor. Courtney Vannoy added 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting off the bench, while Stephanie Karcz led the team with seven rebounds and four assists.
 
Inside the Numbers
- The Green and Gold connected on a season-best 51.8 percent (29-of-56) from the floor in the win. The Tribe shot a sizzling 62.1 percent (18-of-29) in the opening half.
- W&M hit a season-high eight 3-pointers, connecting on 42.1 percent (8-of-19) from distance. The Green and Gold was 6-of-11 (54.5 percent) from distance in the opening 20 minutes.
- The Tribe dished out 20 assists for the second game in a row, tallying a season-high 21 against the Greyhounds. Senior Jenna Green led W&M with seven, while junior Bianca Boggs added five.
- In total all 13 Tribe players saw action in the win and 11 different players found the scoring column.
- W&M blocked 13 shots as a team, which tied for the second most in program history. Five different players blocked shots for W&M on Saturday.
 
Notes
The Tribe picked up its first 20-point victory since downing Mount St. Mary's 68-46 on Dec. 18, 2016 … With her seven block shots, senior Abby Rendle has 252 for her career and is only four away from topping Tiffany Benson's W&M school record … Rendle's seven blocked shot were tied for the sixth-best single-game total in school history … Junior Misha Jones tied a career-high, hitting two 3-pointers in the win … Sophomore Nari Garner tied her career-high with eight points in 16 minutes … With four players in double-figures, the Tribe has now put, at least, three players in double-figures in every game this season ... Senior Jenna Green and junior Bianca Boggs have scored in double-digits in all five contests .... The Tribe started 4-1 on the year for the third-straight season under head coach Ed Swanson.

The Tribe continues its brief two-game home stint, hosting Atlantic-10 opponent Davidson on Monday, Nov. 27. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m., from Kaplan Arena and the game will be broadcast on Tribe Athletics TV via Stretch Internet. There are two promotions attached to the game. The first will be a student tailgate - Join the Tribe for a pregame tailgate featuring light refreshments, games and more - and also basketball bingo will be played during the contest.
