Tribe Men's Swimming Heads to VMI Saturday

The William & Mary men's swimming team heads to Lexington, Va., on Saturday to swim VMI in the final dual meet of the fall semester.  The meet will begin at 11:00 a.m. in the Keydets' Clark King Pool.

The Meet
The two teams will compete in an abbreviated 13-event format, which is really just 11 swimming events.  In addition to the standard five freestyle events (50,100, 200, 500, and 1,000), the teams will also swim the 200s of the three other strokes and the 100 IM.  The two relays will be the 400 medley relay, and finishing off with the 200 free relay.

Scouting the Tribe
W&M swept the CAA Pod Meet last weekend, winning 235-112 over Delaware and 201-140 against UNCW, to improve to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the CAA.  Sophomore Chris Balbo (Short Hills, N.J.) was named the CAA Swimmer of the Week after going 3-1 on the weekend, including beating both teams and breaking his own dual-meet record in the 200 fly at 1:50.74.  For the season, Balbo leads W&M with 11 individual wins while ranking second overall with 111 points, while his classmate Colin Wright (Williamsburg, Va.) has a team-best 134.25 points and ranks second with 10 wins.

Scouting the Keydets
VMI enters the weekend at 1-2 on the year, with a win over Mount St. Mary's and losses to the Mount and Howard.  Some of the Keydets' top swimmers include Brady Gannon, who ranks top-five in the America East conference 50 free at 22.10, as well as distance ace David Turbyfill and breast/IM leader Ryan Cooper.

The Series
This will mark the 25th meeting since 1965 between the Tribe and the Keydets, with W&M holding a 24-0 lead in the series thus far.  Last year was a 167-68 win in Williamsburg, the first time the teams had met since 1988, while this weekend will be the first trip to Lexington for W&M since the fall of 1987.

Notes
This will be the first time that W&M has swum the 100 IM since last year against Delaware ... Will Manion '16 set the school record in the rare event in 2014 against Duke, timing 51.70 ... This is VMI's first home meet since January of 2015, and will also be Senior Day for the Keydets ... This is the fourth time in the last five years that W&M has started 5-1 ... The Tribe finished its conference schedule at 3-0 for the third-straight year, and has now won each of the last 10 meets against CAA teams (dating back to the fall of 2014) ... That's the second-longest conference winning streak in school history, behind only a 15-match winning streak in the Southern Conference from 1968 to 1975 ... In addition to Balbo's dual-meet record in the 200 fly, junior Carter Kale (Williamsburg, Va.) also set a dual-meet record last weekend ... He won the 1,650 free in 15:59.47, breaking the record Balbo set last fall by five seconds ... W&M has now set five dual-meet records this season ... Balbo's Swimmer of the Week was the second in a row and third overall this season for W&M ... Freshman Devin McNulty (Herndon, Va.) was honored on Nov. 1 after sweeping the breaststrokes against Towson, and Wright was the winner back on Oct. 11 after swimming a CAA-leading 20.46 in the 50 free against Johns Hopkins ... In the latest NCAA report, Wright leads the CAA in both the 50 and 100 free, while Kale has the top time in the 1,650 free, Balbo in the 400 IM, and freshman Jake Kealy (Wilton, Conn.) leads in the 200 back ... The Tribe also leads in all four relays swum so far, the 200 free, 400 free, 200 medley, and 400 medley.
