WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary men's soccer team won its fourth straight and upended its second Atlantic Coast Conference opponent of the season, rolling to an exciting 4-1 victory over in-state rival Virginia Tech on Wednesday evening at Martin Family Stadium. Junior
Ryder Bell led the Tribe charge scoring the Tribe's first two goals and assisting on the final two, while junior
Antonio Bustamante and sophomore
Hristo Bustamante tallied a goal and an assist each.
The Tribe (8-4-3, 3-2-2 CAA) broke through in the 26th minute, taking a 1-0 lead thanks to Bell's first marker.
Antonio Bustamante set up the chance, lobbing a pass over the top of the Virginia Tech (7-7, 2-4 ACC) defense. Bell won a foot race to the pass with Hokies goalkeeper Ben Lundgaard. The Tribe forward chested the ball to space, collected and calmly finished into the right side from eight yards out.
After both teams had dangerous chances for more in the first half, the Hokies pulled even in the 49th minute on Marcello Acuna's ninth goal of the season. Brendan Moyers and Elias Tamburini set the play up as the former found the latter to down the left flank. Tamburini sent a low cross to the middle of the area where Acuna settled and finished into right side from 10 yards out.
Not to be out done, Bell answered just 21 seconds later to sway the momentum back to the home side.
Hristo Bustamante served a long pass from near midfield to the top left corner of the 18. Bell warded off a defender, touched to his right foot and hit a bend shot off the underside of the crossbar and into the right side to give the Green and Gold a 2-1 lead.
The Tribe pressure mounted for a third goal, before Bell and
Hristo Bustamante switched roles in the 77th minute to provide cushion on the scoreboard. Bell played Bustamante free into the left side of the penalty arena. The sophomore back touched toward the endline and took a crack, finishing under Lundgaard to the center of the frame from an angled six yards out. It was Bustamante's first career goal.
Antonio Bustamante provided the capper with just seconds remaining in the contest. Bell fed Bustamante down the left flank. The preseason CAA Player of the Year split two Virginia Tech defenders toward the middle of the pitch and scored into the upper right corner from 15 yards out.
