The No. 19 William & Mary field hockey team heads down to Norfolk, Va., Sunday for its only game of the week taking on long-time rival Old Dominion. Sunday's noon start can be watched live on ODUSports.com, or followed on live stats on TribeAthletics.com.
Scouting the Tribe
Despite a 2-0 week with wins over Davidson and Towson, the Tribe (10-4, 3-0 CAA) fell one spot in the national rankings to No. 19 this week and to No. 20 in the latest NCAA RPI. Senior
Cammie Lloyd (Midlothian, Va.) leads five Tribe players in double-digit scoring with 22 points, coming on nine goals and four assists, one helper ahead of classmate
Emma MacLeod (Richmond, Va.). On defense, sophomore
Morgan Connor (Bedford, N.Y.) lowered her GAA to 1.70 with a .750 save percentage, making 66 saves so far this season, and senior
Erin Menges (Richmond, Va.) continues to lead the CAA and rank top-10 nationally with four defensive saves.
Scouting the Lady Monarchs
Old Dominion enters the weekend at 5-7 overall and 2-2 in the Big East, and will face Quinnipiac on Friday night before hosting the Tribe. The Lady Monarchs have been especially tough at home, winning five in a row since opening the year with a 3-2 loss to No. 7 Penn State. Erin Huffman leads the team offensively with 17 points, on eight goals and one assists, with Alexa Ostoich close behind with 14 points (6g, 2a). On defense, Kealsie Robles has seen the majority of action in goal with a 2.71 GAA and 58 saves (a .682 save percentage), but Lacey Frazier has been starting lately and has a 2.32 GAA and 12 saves on a .667 percentage.
The Series
- Old Dominion, long a national powerhouse, leads the series with W&M 47-11, and 24-3 in Norfolk. The last Tribe win in the series came in 2004, a 2-1 win in Williamsburg, while the last time W&M won in Norfolk came back in 1977.
News and Notes
- W&M is 3-0 in the CAA for the first time since 2005, and just the third time ever. The Tribe started perfect in 2004, going on to win the regular season at 7-0.
- MacLeod's four-goal game against Hofstra was one of just four such games in the entire country this season so far. Two-time defending National Player of the Year Tara Vittese had a five-goal game against Monmouth, while Charlotte Veittner of No. 1-ranked and undefeated Connecticut had the other two.
- Sophomore
Woodard Hooper (Reston, Va.) scored the game-winner against Davidson, and now has four on the year, best in the CAA and tied for third-most in the country.
- MacLeod is the first W&M player since
Ann Ekberg '03 in 2002 to win CAA Player of the Week honors in consecutive weeks. Now with three Player of the Week nods in her career, MacLeod is also tied for the all-time program record alongside Ekberg,
Kelly Giles '06, and her classmate Lloyd.
- W&M's 8-0 win over La Salle broke the school record for points in a game, with 24 (8g,8a). The previous record was 23 points (9g,5a) set in 1990 against Lehigh. The game also saw W&M's second-most assists ever (8), t-3rd-most goals (8), and t-8th-most shots (40).
- W&M has had a player score two assists in a game seven times already this season, most recently when
Cassidy Goodwin (Gloucester, Va.) had a pair against Davidson. That is tied for 10th-most in a single game in school history, along with double-helpers by
Estelle Hughes (Newcastle, NSW), MacLeod,
Annie Snead (Midlothian, Va.) and Menges against La Salle,
Christie van de Kamp (Midlothian, Va.) against Pacific, and
Booter Ellis (Delmar, Del.) against Fairfield.
-
Woodard Hooper was named CAA Player of the Week on Sept. 12, after scoring two goals including the game-winner against No. 7 Michigan.
- In addition to Connor,
Meredith Clay (Charlotte, N.C.) and
Jessica Wiggins (Williamsburg, Va.) have both seen time in goal this season. This is only the fifth year that W&M has had three or more goalkeepers see playing time, joining 2013, 2012, 1998, and 1995.
- W&M's No. 18 ranking in Weeks 2, 3, & 5 were the highest for the Tribe since reaching No. 17 midway through the 2006 season. Since 1993, the highest W&M has been ranked in the coaches poll was ninth, in the second poll of the 2000 season.
- Three of the Tribe's four losses have come against top-10 ranked teams.
- The W&M defense made three defensive saves in the loss to Boston College, its best total since making four against Old Dominion back in 2005.
Cassidy Goodwin made two stops and
Katherine Hull (Fredericksburg, Va.) one, all to preserve what was then a 0-0 deadlock.
- Connor made 14 saves against Boston College, beating her previous career high by three saves. That was the most saves in a single game by a Tribe goalkeeper since the 2009 season, and combined with the three defensive saves, W&M's 17 total stops were the most for a single game since 2002.
- With both UC Davis and Pacific on the schedule, this the first year since 1985 that W&M will play multiple West Coast teams in the same year. Back then, it was San Jose State (who no longer has a team) and Stanford who had the honors. Currently, there are only four West Coast field hockey teams in the NCAA - UC Davis, Pacific, Stanford, and California.
- Tribe players had an outstanding summer on the Team USA circuit, with six players being invited to the YWNC, and five of those earning an invitation onwards to the Team USA selection camps.
Erin Menges was named to the National Developmental Squad, while
Christie van de Kamp was chosen for the U21 National Team and
Annie Snead was named an alternate to the U21 team as well.
- At the conclusion of spring training, the team selected
Erin Menges and
Katelyn Rennyson (Centreville, Va.) as team captains.
