WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Redshirt junior
Graham Guidry scored the game-winner in the 66th minute to lift the William & Mary men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Colonial Athletic Association foe Elon on Wednesday night. W&M won its second-straight in CAA play to improve to 6-4-3 and 2-2-2 in league play, while Elon fell to 3-3-6 and 0-2-3 in conference action.
W&M nearly got on the board in the first half, but an Elon team save stopped the chance. Senior
William Eskay made a nice run into the box and forced the ball away from the Elon keeper. Off the deflection, the ball fell to Guidry, but his chance from 12 yards out was stopped on a sliding stab by a Phoenix defender.
After attempting seven of the final eight shots in the opening half, the Tribe turned up the pressure with the first eight of the second period, culminating in the winner. W&M's first two chances of the second half came in the opening 30 seconds. The Tribe nearly found the first marker in the 52nd minute. Junior
Antonio Bustamante ripped a shot from 25 yards out that left the Elon goalkeeper flat footed, but the chance clanged off the right post.
W&M finally broke the scoreless deadlock in the 66th minute. Sophomore
Julian Ngoh worked the ball into the box from the right side and sent a hard cross toward the six. Elon goalkeeper Matthew Jegier deflected it, but the rebound bounced right to Guidry, who followed it up into the center of the goal to put the Green and Gold in front, 1-0.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper
Phil Breno earned his fifth clean sheet of the season in the victory. Although Elon did not turn a shot on target, Breno faced seven shots in his sixth win of the year.
