WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary women's soccer team suffered a 3-1 setback to league-leading Hofstra on Sunday afternoon at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field. Sophomore
Sarah Segan scored her team-leading fourth of the season for the Tribe (4-8-1, 0-3-1 CAA).
Hofstra (8-3-2, 4-0 CAA) jumped in front just four minutes into the game on a goal from Lucy Porter. Off a Pride corner, the ball deflected around the box until Bell Richards flicked the ball in the air inside the middle of the area. Porter connected and headed into an empty net to give the visitors the lead. The Pride doubled its lead on a breakaway goal from Kristin Desmond. Off a goal kick, Hofstra's Jenn Buoncore won a header and set Desmond free down the middle of the pitch.
W&M's pressure mounted toward the end of the first half, but they could not break through. The Tribe had a golden chance to draw closer in the 38th minute when the Pride were whistled for a hand ball in the box, but senior
Elysse Branton's spot kick was stopped on a diving stab by Jenna Borresen.
Hofstra scored 10 minutes into the second half to increase its margin to 3-0. Richards recorded her second assist of the game, setting Buoncore up on a breakaway from the left side. She scored on a strike from 12 yards out into the upper right corner of the game.
Segan put W&M on the board with a volley strike from 10 yards out in the 83rd minute. Freshman
Alex Kuhnle crossed the ball from the right side, and Segan chested it down, before finishing into the left side.
