ELON, N.C. – The William & Mary women's soccer team scored the equalizer in the final minute of regulation, and battled Elon to a 2-2 draw on Thursday night in Elon, N.C. With the result, the Tribe is now 4-8-2, 0-3-2 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while the Phoenix are now 8-4-3, 1-2-2 in league action
Elon jumped on the board with a goal in the 29th minute. Meredith Christopher laid a pass 12 yards out to Reena Wichmann on the right side. Wichmann fired her shot into the lower left side of the goal. Her second goal of the season made it 1-0 Phoenix.
The Tribe found the equalizer early in the second half. Senior
Elysse Branton made a nice run down the middle of the pitch before dishing to the left to her wide-open classmate
Sami Grasso. The senior composed herself and fired into the lower right corner of the net, tying the score.
Elon regained the lead just 11 minutes following the Tribe's goal. Christopher cleared some space from 10-yards out and placed her shot off the post, but got the home roll to put the Phoenix back in front.
W&M found the equalizer for the second time in the match in the final minute. As the Tribe was pushing forward, Branton was taken down in the box and the Tribe was awarded the penalty. Redshirt sophomore
Sarah Segan stepped to the spot and buried the shot.
Neither team could find the winner in the overtime, but each side had a very dangerous chance. In the first overtime, Christopher had a 1-versus-1 with redshirt senior goalkeeper
Grace Smith, but Smith made the diving save. Then in the second overtime period, senior
Rachel Moore turned a header on target, but Hannah Macaulay was there for the stop.
