CHARLESTON, S.C. – The William & Mary women's basketball team saw its single-season-school record 11-game winning streak come to an end with a 70-60 setback at College of Charleston on Friday night. With the decision the Tribe falls to 11-2, 1-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while the Cougars improve to 4-9, 1-1 in league action.
Senior
Alexandra Masaquel led three in double-figures for the Green and Gold scoring a season-high 24 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. She added three assists, a block and a steal. Junior
Abby Rendle added 16 points, while senior
Marlena Tremba rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 points.
W&M used a 17-5 run to build a double-digit lead, its largest of the half during the middle stages of the first quarter. Tremba opened the Tribe scoring with a triple, before back-to-back baskets from Rendle. Masaquel continued the rally with six points around just three from Charleston. Kasey Curtis put the Tribe up 17-7 with 1:52 left in the quarter.
The second quarter was all Charleston as they outscored the Tribe 26-12 in the second 10 minutes. The Cougars used an 8-2 run to tie the score, before using an 8-0 run to regain the lead. Bolden scored the first four points, before Schiclasia Brown got a steal and basket in transition to cut it two. Following another Tribe basket, the Cougars scored four in a row on buckets from Brown and Brianna Boyd tying the game at 19-19
W&M responded to build a 24-19 lead, but the Cougars raced out to an 8-0 run regaining its first lead since 2-0 and never relinquished it. Bolded open the spurt at the free throw line, before she had a steal and a layup making it 25-24 Cougars. Tanisha Brown had a lay-up, before Bolden capped the spurt with another bucket.
The Tribe opened the second half with a 6-3 run, to cut the deficit to three points, but that's how close they would come the rest of the way. After CofC scored on its first possession, Rendle scored followed by a Masaquel basket. After a Bolden free throw, Rendle knocked down a free throw line jumper making it 38-35.
Leading 52-43, the Cougars used a 5-0 run, building its largest lead of the game. Boyd scored all five points and moved the lead to 57-43 with 6:14 left in regulation.
Following a timeout, the Tribe used a 7-0 run to bring it to seven, but the Cougars survived the outburst. Tremba buried a triple, before Masaquel added back-to-back layups, cutting the lead to 57-50.
A big Darien Huff triple as the shot clocked expired with 4:01 left extended the lead back to double-figures and allowed the Cougars to hang on.
Junior
Jenna Green again displayed her strong skills at point guard and turned a career-high 11 helpers, which was tied for the school's fifth-best single game performance. It was the first time since the Clemson game on Dec. 5, 2015 that a Tribe player recorded double-figure assists. She is yet to recorded a turnover in CAA play. Green also added four points, two blocks, and two steals.
Bolden was the story for CofC finishing with a double-double. She had 24 points and 15 rebounds, while she added an assist, two blocks, and three steals. Tanisha Brown finished the game with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Huff added 13 points. Boyd was the fourth Cougar in double-figures with 13 points and eight rebounds off of the bench.
