Senior Marlena Tremba's Heroics Put Women's Basketball Back in the Win Column

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Senior Marlena Tremba's floater with 21 seconds left lifted the William & Mary women's basketball team to a 60-58 victory over Colonial Athletic Association rival Northeastern on Friday night at Kaplan Arena.  With the victory, the Tribe improves to 12-2, which continues the best start in school history, and 2-1 in league action. The Huskies drop to 6-10, 2-2 in CAA play.

Senior Alexandra Masaquel registered a game-high 18 points and 10 rebounds on her way to her second straight double-double,  her fourth of the season, and her 14th of her career, which ties her seventh all-time. Classmate Marlena Tremba got back on track when she swished a three-quarter-court triple to end the third quarter and knocked down seven of her 16 points in the final stanza. The Vienna, Va. native added five rebounds, two assists, and a season-high sixth thefts.

Trailing by nine with 3:54 left in the third quarter and staring down its second straight loss, the Tribe responded with a 17-3 run to end the period and open the fourth quarter. The run started with a 13-3 run to end the third quarter. Masaquel and Tremba each hit a free throw, before senior Latrice Hunter hit a jumper. Junior Abby Rendle and Tremba  knocked down four straight from the line to cut it to one, before Masaquel hit a lay up to make it 44-43. After NU's Claudia Ortiz canned three from the free throw after she was fouled on her half court heave, Tremba got the in-bound and chucked a 75-footer into the bottom of the net, giving the Tribe a 47-46 lead after three.

W&M used the momentum and scored the first four points of the fourth quarter. Back-to-back lay-ups from Rendle and Masaquel gave the Tribe its largest lead at 51-46 with 9:07 left.

The Huskies didn't go away and used a 5-0 run starting at the 2:56 mark to tie the score at 58-58 with 42 seconds left. Jess Genco canned a triple, before Francesca Sally knocked down a jumper to account for the run.

With 21 seconds left, Tremba delivered more heroics. She drove the left side of the lane and lofted a floater over the outstretched Sally, off the square and home. The Huskies had two chances on the final possession that were each affected by Rendle. The first came on a triple from Sally that was swatted away by the junior. With one second left NU tried a lob to Sally, but again Rendle was there and Sally's shot went over the rim.

The entire game was a back and forth affair with neither team establishing more than two-possession lead in the first half. W&M led both quarters by one point taking a 15-14 lead after the first 10 minutes, and a 29-28 lead at the break.

Rendle provided a solid game on the defensive end, finishing with six points, five boards, and six blocked shots. Junior Jenna Green added four points and four helpers.

W&M again took care of the basketball committing just 10 turnovers, and only three in the second half. They paired that with 13 assists, 15 steals, and nine blocks. The nine blocks are tied for the ninth best in single-game history.

The Tribe heads right back out on the road as they open a two-game road swing at UNCW on Sunday, Jan. 15. Tip time between the Tribe and the Seahawks is at 2 p.m.
