Women's Basketball Comeback Attempt Falls Just Short at Towson

TOWSON, Md. – The William & Mary women's basketball team erased a 12-point first half deficit, but couldn't overcome a 10-point fourth quarter deficit as the comeback fell just short falling 64-60 at Towson on Friday night. With the decision, the Tribe falls to 13-3, 3-2 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while the Tigers improve to 10-7, 3-3 in league action.

Senior Marlena Tremba finished the game with 15 points, five rebounds, and a block. Junior Jenna Green equaled team-high honors as she poured in a season-high 15 points, added eight dimes, three steals, and a rebound. Classmate Abby Rendle rounded out the double-figure scores as she finished with 11 points, eight rebounds, four blocks, an assist, and a steal.

W&M opened the game with a 6-0 run, building a lead by the same score. Rendle opened the scoring with a jumper, before Green scored the next four points, forcing Towson into a timeout.

Towson responded with a 14-2 run, taking an eight point advantage. Mary Cuevas got the Tigers on the board, and Sianni Martin added four in a row to tie the score. Maia Lee gave the Tigers their first lead, before Raven Bankston hit a lay-up. W&M answered with a Tremba, bucket, before Cuevas canned a pair of free throws and Raven Bankston hit a lay-up making it 14-6 with 2:32 left in the quarter.

Trailing 28-16, W&M closed the second quarter on a 12-2 run, to cut the halftime deficit to just two points. Tremba started the rally with a triple, before Green got a steal and lay-up, and Boggs converted on two from the line. Towson hit two free throws sandwiched around a Tremba jumper. However, W&M responded with a 3-pointer from Boggs making it 30-28 at the half.

W&M used another quick 4-0 run to build a six-point advantage late in the third quarter. Senior Kasey Curtis put in a lay-up, before classmate Latrice Hunter scored in transition, making it 44-40.

The Tigers countered with a 6-0 run to take the lead, before Hunter hit a floater to tie the score at the end of three.Raven Bankston had four points in the run pacing TU.

With score tied 46-46, Towson opened the final period with a 13-3 to regain a double-digit lead. Lee sparked the rally with a jumper, before Raven Bankston made it 50-46. Martian scored the next five points to make it a nine-point margin. After Rendle completed a traditional 3-point play, Raine Bankston knocked down a jumper, and Martin cashed in on two more from the line, making it 59-49.

The Tribe rallied back and was able to get within three points with a 9-2 run. Tremba and Cuevas traded baskets to open the spurt. W&M then exploded for seven straight points as Green drained a 3-pointer, freshman Victoria Reynolds got a steal and converted the lay-up, and Green put in a lay-up making it 61-58 with 1:59 remaining.

Each team traded baskets on the next two possessions, but the Tribe came away empty on its final two chances. Raven Bankston knocked home on free throw, making the final score 64-60.

For the second straight game, W&M recorded 18 steals, and forced 24 turnovers. It was the first time this year, the Tribe has lost a game in which they force, more than, 20 miscues. Reynolds led the team with six steals, while Boggs had four and Green had three thefts.

Martin led four Tigers in double-figures with a game-high 16 points, adding three rebounds, two assists, and four steals. Cuevas and Lee each posted double-doubles finishing with 15 points and 14 rebounds and 12 points and 10 rebounds, respectively. Raven Bankston closed out the double-figure scorers with 13 points, three rebounds, two assists, and four steals.

The Green and Gold return to action as they open a season-long three-game homestand against Elon on Sunday, Jan. 22. Tip time is set for 7 p.m.
