WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Elon's Lauren Brown hit a pair of free throws with just over a second left to lift the first-place Phoenix to a 60-58 victory over the William & Mary women's basketball team on Sunday afternoon at Kaplan Arena. With the setback, the Tribe falls to 13-4, 3-3 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while the Phoenix move to 14-5, 6-1 in league action.

Abby Rendle led four Tribe players in double-figures with 13 points, eight rebounds, five blocks, and four steals. Senior
Marlena Tremba, sophomore
Bianca Boggs, and freshman
Victoria Reynolds each finished with 10 points. Tremba added three rebounds, two assists, one block, and two steals, while Reynolds added three rebounds, two assists, and three steals.
Tied 7-7, W&M used a 7-0 run, building its largest lead of the game. Rendle opened the run with a lay-up, before Boggs scored five points in a row to cap the run.
Elon closed the lead to three, but W&M closed the quarter scoring five of the last seven points, building a 19-13 lead at the end of the quarter. Tremba completed a traditional 3-point play, before Elon answered. Reynolds closed the stanza with a jumper.
The Phoenix dominated the second quarter and outscored W&M 22-10 in the second 10 minutes. Trailing 23-17, they used a 14-2 rally to flip the script on the Tribe. Malaya Johnson opened the rally, before Shay Burnett knocked down a trey. Lenaira Ruffin hit a jumper to give Elon its first lead, before Maddie McCallie knocked a triple. Senior
Alexandra Masaquel answered with a jumper, but Essence Baucom and Johnson hit lay-ups making 31-25.
Both teams traded a pair of baskets, giving Elon a 35-29 lead in at halftime. The Phoenix shot 53.3-percent from the field in the first half, and they limited from 36.7-percent.
The third quarter was back and forth as the teams each scored 10 points apiece. Elon maintain its six-point lead at the end of 30 minutes.
Trailing 56-50, W&M used an 8-2 run to tie the score for the first time since the first half. Reynolds connected on a free throw before Rendle knocked down a traditional 3-point play. Elon got a bucket from Jada Graves, but the Tribe responded with a jumper from
Jenna Green and a lay-up from Masaquel to tie the score at 58-58 with 26 seconds left.
On Elon's final possession Burnett threw up a wild shot, and in the chaos for the rebound a foul was whistled on the Tribe. Lauren Brown calmly walked to the line and knocked down both free throws. W&M couldn't get a shot off in the final one-plus second.
Johnson, Brown, and Burnett all finished with 10 points for Elon. Burnetted added eight rebounds, five assists, and two steals, while Johnson grabbed seven and swatted four shots.
W&M continues its season-long three-game homestand as they welcome Delaware to Kaplan Arena on Friday, Jan. 27. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. The homestand concludes as the Tribe plays host to three-time defending league champion James Madison for the Golden Game. All fans are encouraged to wear gold and the first 1,000 will receive free gold rally towels. Tip time is set for 2 p.m.
