WILMINGTON, N.C. – Four players scored in double-figures and the defense limited UNCW to just four field goals in the first and fourth quarters as the William & Mary women's basketball team topped UNCW 57-43 at Trask Coliseum on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Tribe improves to 13-2, 3-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while the Seahawks fall to 5-11, 0-5 in league action.
Sophomore
Bianca Boggs scored a game-high 13 points, added three rebounds, two assists, two blocks and four steals. Senior
Alexandra Masaquel scored 12 points, which was her 10th straight game in double-figures. The senior added four rebounds, and four steals. Senior
Marlena Tremba had 11 points, while freshman
Victoria Reynolds chipped in 10 points off of the bench.
W&M opened the game on an 18-2 run racing out to a lead by the same score and never looked back. Junior
Jenna Green opened the scoring with a jumper, before Boggs forced a steal and scored on a lay-up. After a Seahawk free throw, Boggs buried a triple, senior
Kasey Curtis scored on a lay-up, before Masaquel scored six in a row. Again UNCW answered with a free throw, but Reynolds nailed a triple making it 18-2 with 2:04 left in the first quarter.
The Tribe held a 22-5 advantage after the first 10 minutes. W&M shot 9-of-16 from the field for 56.3-percent, while limiting UNCW to just 14.3-precent from the floor.
UNCW opened the second quarter with an 8-1 run to cut the lead to 10. Timber Tate opened the rally with back-to-back triples, before Green connected on one from the stripe. A basket by Jordan Henry made the score 23-13 with 5:54 left in the half.
The Seahawks cut the lead to seven, but the Tribe responded with a 6-1 run, closing the half. Tremba opened the run with a triple, but Madison Raque answered with a free throw. Reynolds closed the half with a triple right before the buzzer making it 33-21 at the break.
Trailing 35-21, the Seahawks used an 8-0 run to cut the Tribe lead back to six points. Henry scored the first four points of the spurt, before Raque added two of her own. Henry capped the run with a jumper, making it 35-29 with 6:27 left.
UNCW brought the score within in five late in the third quarter, but the Tribe used a 12-2 run to open the fourth quarter and iced the game. Boggs buried a triple, opening the scoring, before she added two from the line restoring a double-digit lead. After a Seahawk basket, Masaquel scored four straight and Tremba knocked home a 3-pointer pushing the advantage 53-37 with 3:56.
It was the eighth time this season that the Tribe has held its opponent under 50 points. During coach
Ed Swanson's tenure the Tribe is now 15-1 when they hold their opponent under 50 points, including 8-0 this year. W&M's defense also forced, more than, 20 turnovers for the sixth time this year, forcing 23. The Tribe 6-0 in those games
Henry and Tate each scored 12 points for the Seahawks. Henry chipped five rebounds and four assists, while Tate had four rebounds and two assists.
The Green and Gold closes its two game road trip as they travel to Towson on Friday, Jan. 20. W&M returns home to face Elon on Sunday, Jan. 22. Tip times are set for 7 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
