WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary men's soccer team battled James Madison to a scoreless draw in a game only played to the 80th minute because of lightning in the area. With the decision, the Tribe is now 5-3-2, 0-1-2 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while James Madison is now 0-8-3, 0-1-2 in league action.
The first half was played to a scoreless draw, but both teams each had numerous quality chances. The first came for the Tribe in the eighth minute when redshirt junior
Riley Spain sent classmate
Alfonso Speed Jr. free down the right sideline. Speed sent a cross into the box that found the head of sophomore
Antonio Bustamante, but his shot was saved by Kyle Morton.
In the 28th minute junior
William Eskay cleared some space in the box, and put a good look on target, but again Morton had the save. The final chance came off of a corner kick in the 35th minute, when the Tribe worked the ball back into the box eventually ending a saved header from freshman
Tanner Shane.
James Madison also a few quality looks throughout the first half. Their first came in the 16th minute when Ben Dao put a shot on frame that was turned away by redshirt junior
Phil Breno.
Later in the 19th minute, Callum Hill put a rebound back on target, but again Breno stood strong. The best look came in the 25th minute off of a free kick, that Aaron Ward-Baptiste put right on frame, but again the Tribe keeper made the save. Right before the break, Ward-Baptiste turned a header on target that Breno caught.
The Tribe opened the second half with another good look, but the result was the same. Sophomore
Ryder Bell turned a shot that had to be saved by Morton.
JMU had some chances in the middle part of the period, but couldn't put any on the frame. Dao pushed two shots wide in the 62nd and 74th minute, sandwiched around a shot by Toby Appleton that was blocked.
W&M had two good looks in the 78th and 79th minute of the match. The first came off of the foot of Eskay and had to be saved by Morton. Then a moment later, sophomore
Marcel Berry was behind the Dukes' defense and Morton charged up near midfield. Berry's shot rolled just passed the post.
The game went into a lightning delay in the 80th minute, and never resumed because of rule. Since the match went official after playing 70 minutes, the game was called in a 0-0 draw.
W&M held a 15-10 advantage in shots, which included a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. Bell and Eskay each fired a match-high four shots apiece for W&M. Breno made four saves in his fourth shutout of the season.
The Green and Gold close out its two-match homestand as they welcome league foe Northeastern to Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field on Saturday, Oct. 1.
