WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Three W&M sophomores combined to score seven goals as the William & Mary men's soccer team dominated Northeastern 7-1 on Crapolfest VIII Saturday night at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field. Sophomore
Antonio Bustamante led the way with a hat trick, while classmates
Ryder Bell and
Marcel Berry scored two goals apiece. With the win, the Tribe improves to 6-3-2, 1-1-2 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while the Huskies drop to 2-8-0, 1-3-0 in league action.
The hat trick was the first of
Antonio Bustamante's career and the first Tribe hat trick since junior
William Eskay recorded the same feat on Sept. 1, 2015 against Liberty. The seven goals were the most since W&M picked up a 7-0 win over Richmond on Sept. 23, 2009, and was the most against a CAA opponent since an 8-0 victory over UNCW in the 2000 CAA Tournament. It also is tied for the second-most goals in Albert-Daly Field history. The seven markers were the most goals for a CAA team since Delaware scored seven versus Howard on Oct. 23, 2013.
William & Mary made the most of its first opportunity of the night putting away goal in the match's third match. Berry drove down the right side of the pitch and into the box. He played a cross back to the middle of the box for
Antonio Bustamante. The sophomore buried his one-time chance into the left corner of the goal. His third of the season made it 1-0 Tribe.
Four minutes later the Tribe attack found the back of the net again. From just passed midfield Eskay sent a long ball that sprung Bell to the races. Bell streaked down the left sideline before placing his shot perfectly in the lower right of the goal.
Antonio Bustamante struck again in the 34th minute. Redshirt junior
Riley Spain started the run with a feed to redshirt sophomore
Christian Jones down the right side of the field.
Christian Jones drove to the endline, before sending a cross all the way across the box to the left post, where
Antonio Bustamante directed it home. His second goal of the night gave W&M a 3-0 advantage.
Much like the first half, W&M wasted little time get on the board in the second half, netting its fourth marker in the scoring the 46th minute. Freshman
Ricardo Acosta sent a through ball into the box that sprung Bell on a breakaway against the keeper. The sophomore planted his shot into the right middle of the net, making it 4-0 Tribe.
In the 55th minute, Berry got on the scoresheet with a goal for the first time this season.
Antonio Bustamante and Berry worked the give-and-go to perfection that set Berry free in the box. Berry placed his shot in the middle left of the goal, lifting the Tribe to a 5-0 lead.
Antonio Bustamante completed his hat trick with his third marker just three minutes later. Berry raced down the right side of the field and into the box before laying one back for
Antonio Bustamante. Like he did the two previous times, the Springfield, Virginia native sent his shot home, making it 6-0.
The final marker for the Tribe came off of the foot of Berry. Bell started the play with a long ball into the right side of the box that found Eskay. Eskay laid the ball back for Berry, who uncorked it into the lower right of the goal.
Northeastern broke the shutout with a goal in the 74th minute. Ackim Mpofu sent a cross from the right side of the field to the middle of the box. Daniel Arvidsson chased it down, and directed it into the net, cutting the lead to 7-1.
After a week off, the Green and Gold returns to CAA play for a pair of road matches. The Tribe travels to Hofstra on Saturday, Oct. 8, before heading to Elon on Wednesday, Oct. 12. Kickoffs are scheduled for 7:30, and 7 p.m. respectively.
