The William & Mary volleyball team fell in a hard-fought match at Elon Sunday, 3-0. The Tribe moves to 6-9 on the year and 0-2 in Colonial Athletic Association, while the Phoenix improve to 14-4 overall and 1-1 in league play.
"Even though we lost in three to a good team, I do think we are taking steps in the right direction," head coach
Melissa Ferris commented after the match. "This team is working hard and getting better each day in practice. We now need to learn how to have the same 'never say die' attitude that we have in practice, in matches as well. When we do that, we will be unstoppable."
"This match was another reminder that we need to keep working hard and trusting the process. These players are all in and that's all I can ask for. Our time will come, and we're going to work hard to make that happen sooner rather than later."
Freshman
Casey Foote (Prospect, Ky.) led the Tribe with 11 kills on a .300 attack on the afternoon, and also added in eight digs. Junior
Sydney Biniak (Elkridge, Md.) was close behind once again with nine kills, and freshman
Alex Stein (East Setauket, N.Y.) paired four kills and five digs.
Sophomore
Katie Kemp (Brentwood, Tenn.) came on in the second set, and produced 18 assists with five digs and a kill in relief of
Autumn Brenner (McLean, Va.), who had 12 assists, six digs, and a block and a kill in little more than a set. On defense, senior
Gabrielle Pe (Virginia Beach, Va.) had a team-high 12 digs and a service ace, and junior
Sara Zumbach (Franklin, Tenn.) made 11 more digs.
William & Mary finishes out its seven-match road swing next weekend, traveling to the far northern marches. The Tribe takes on Northeastern on Friday night, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m., before visiting Hofstra on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
