WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary women's soccer team scored three goals in the first 26 minutes of action, and strong defense and goalkeeping the rest of the way catapulted them to a 3-0 win in the Colonial Athletic Association opener over James Madison on Friday night at Albert-Daly Field. Freshman
Charlotte Hyland, redshirt freshman
Sarah Segan, and junior
Sami Grasso all recorded goals for the Green and Gold. With the decision, the Tribe improves to 7-3-0, 1-0-0 in CAA play, while the Dukes fall to 3-7-0, 0-1-0 in league action.
James Madison nearly scored in just the second minute of the match. Haley Crawford uncorked a shot from the top of the box that was saved off of the crossbar by redshirt freshman goalkeeper
Kaitlyn Briguglio. The ricochet from the shot landed out of play, ending the threat.
Five minutes later, William & Mary made the Dukes pay. Off a free kick, the ball bounced freely in the box, before sophomore
Mackenzie Kober got on the other end of it. Kober sent a pass to the right side of the box, where Hyland was waiting. The rookie lofted it perfectly into the left corner of the goal for the tally. Hyland's first goal of her career gave the Tribe an early 1-0 lead.
The Tribe doubled its lead with its second goal in the 14th minute. This time some nifty passing from Hyland and junior
Rachel Moore set up Segan for a breakaway with the keeper. Segan directed her shot around the goalie, who rushed up to try to make a play, and into the left corner of the net. The freshman's seventh goal of the season gave W&M the 2-0 advantage.
JMU had two golden opportunities to get on the scoreboard in the 14th minutes, moments after the second W&M goal. Steffi Page fired a shot from just outside of the penalty area that careened off of the crossbar. Page was able to get her head to the rebound and force Briguglio to come up with save on her second shot.
W&M put away its third and final of the goal in the 26th minute. Off of free kick on the other side of midfield, Moore sent the ball all the way into the box. Grasso was able to bring the ball down, and in one movement launched a shot into the upper left corner of the goal. Grasso's second goal of the season gave the Tribe a 3-0 lead.
The Dukes controlled the offensive play in the second half holding a 15-3 advantage in shots, but could find a marker thanks to the Tribe defense and junior
Samantha Johnson in goal. The junior made six saves in the final 69 minutes of the match, while the defense was credited with a pair of team saves.
Despite the win, James Madison outshot W&M by a margin of 22-10, and held a 13-5 lead in shots on-goal. Individually, Grasso led the Tribe with six shots on the evening.
Briguglio made her second straight start for the Green and Gold and was credited with five saves and the victory, before she departed. Johnson came in and made six saves in the victory. It was the team's fifth shutout of the season.
The Green and Gold continue its five-game homestand and CAA play as they close out the weekend with Towson on Sunday, Sept. 25. Kickoff between the Tribe and the Tigers is set for 2 p.m.
