WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Redshirt freshman
Sarah Segan netted a pair of goals as the William & Mary women's soccer team closed out non-conference play with a 2-1 triumph over Marshall. With the win, the Tribe improves to 6-3-0, while the Thundering Herd falls to 2-4-2.
William & Mary jumped on the board first with a goal in just the sixth minute of the match. Junior
Rachel Moore sent a long ball that set Segan free to a one-versus-one with the goalkeeper. Segan ran around the keeper and scored into the empty net. Her fifth of the season gave, W&M a 1-0 lead.
The College had two chances to extend its lead to 2-0 following the early tally. Both sophomore
Claire Robbins and Segan put shots on frame that had to be stopped by Marsahll goalkeeper Megan Bonelli.
Marshall leveled the scored in the 19th minute of the match. Sydney Arnold drove the left side of the box and sent a cross that found Shontelle Smith in the middle of the area. She fired a one-timed shot into the net making the score 1-1.
The Tribe had a few looks to break the tie before halftime, but couldn't find the back of the net. Senior
Haley Kavanaugh turned a header on frame that was saved by Bonelli in the 35th minute, before classmate
Kady Kriner had her shot stopped in the 41st minute.
Segan struck again in the 60th minute. Segan and sophomore
Mackenzie Kober were on a 2-versus-1 break away with the goalie when Kober fired a shot that was stopped by Bonelli. The rebound came right to Segan and she fired into empty net. Her second of the game gave W&M the 2-1 advantage.
The Thundering Herd had few more chances throughout the course of regulation, but didn't put any on frame. Jordan Parkhurst missed high in the 68th minute, before Arnold missed high in the 71st. The best chance came in the 79th minute when Jordan Sackaris hit the post, but the ball rolled out of play.
Aside from the scoreline, the match was pretty even in terms of offensive stats. W&M held a 14-12 advantage in shots, which included a 10-3 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams finished with three comer kicks apiece. Segan led the team with a match-high five shots.
Freshman
Kaitlyn Briguglio earned the start in goal for the Tribe, which was her first start of her career. She recorded a pair of saves, while facing 12 shots in her first career victory.
The Green and Gold now turns its attention to Colonial Athletic Association play as they continue its five-match homestand. W&M welcomes defending league champion James Madison on Friday, Sept. 23, before hosting Towson on Sunday, Sept. 25. Kickoffs are scheduled for 7 p.m., and 2 p.m.
