WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – High Point scored three unanswered goals, including Tyler Gordon's golden goal in overtime as they upended the William & Mary women's soccer team 3-2. With the setback, the Tribe falls to 5-3, while High Point improves 4-4-1.
William & Mary dominated the first half of play, but couldn't muster a goal in the first 45 minutes. The Tribe fired 12 shots, while holding High Point without a shot, which also included seven shots on-goal. Seniors
Haley Kavanaugh and
Kady Kriner, as well as juniors
Sami Grasso (two),
Rachel Moore (two), and
Haley Kent all fired shots on-goal, but High Point's Alex Hank saved them all.
The Tribe finally broke through with a little help from the High Point defense scoring an own goal in the 55th minute. Kent drove down to the end of the left side of the pitch and sent a cross in. Tribe players were racing to the cross, but a Panther defender accidentally kicked the ball into the back of the net on a clear attempt.
W&M kept its pressure strong and found a second goal in the 80th minute. Grasso set Segan free with a long ball into the box. The rookie collected the ball on the left side of the 18, and uncorked a shot that was planted into the middle left of the goal. Her fourth of the season lifted the Green and Gold to a 2-0 lead.
High Point began its comeback immediately and scored later in the 80th minute. Off of a throw-in, Kelsey Perrell sent a ball into the box that rolled around dangerously. Meredith Dunker finally got to the loose ball and flicked it in to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Panthers continued to mount the pressure and earned a PK in the 83rd minute. After a Tribe foul in the 18, Perrell stepped to the spot and uncorked the game-tying goal into the back of the net.
HPU had two more chances in regulation to put the game away, but redshirt junior
Grace Smith came up with the stop on both. Bri Jean-Charles sent a screamer in from distances, but Smith made a diving save. In the final seconds of the match, Jean-Charles was able to turn a header on target off of a corner, but Smith caught the chance as the horn sounded.
The Tribe, like most of the match, controlled the opening eight minutes of the overtime period. Kent put a shot on target in the 93rd minute, before Kavanaugh just missed wide, and Segan had a shot saved in the 97th minute.
Against the run of play, Gordon fired a shot from outside of the box that bounced its way into the back of the net. The tally gave HPU the 3-2 victory.
W&M held a commanding 22-9 advantage in shots, which included a 12-6 advantage in shots on-goal. Segan fired a match-high six shots, while Moore recorded five shots. Smith came up with three saves in goal.
The Green and Gold return to action on Sunday, Sept. 18 when they close out non-conference play with Marshall at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
