Big Seventh and Eighth Innings Propel Baseball to Senior Day Victory

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary baseball rallied for four runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to propel itself to a 9-1 series clinching win over Towson on Senior Day at Plumeri Park. With the win, the Tribe takes its fourth straight Colonial Athletic Association series and improves to 24-23, 13-7 in CAA play, while Towson drops 18-30, 8-10 in league action.

Junior Charles Ameer led the Tribe with a 2-for-3 day and three RBI, while sophomore Ryan Hall and senior Charley Gould collected multi-hit games. Freshman Zach Pearson had three RBIs as well.

Again junior starting pitcher Daniel Powers was strong on the mound for the Green and Gold. He tossed a career-high eight innings allowing just one run on five hits. The junior fanned three batters as he picked up his team's best seventh victory.

Ameer gave the Tribe a 1-0 lead with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the third inning. He belted a 3-1 pitch over the left field wall for his sixth homer of the season.

Towson responded with a run in the top of the fourth inning. Three straight singles from Colin Gimblet, Brady Policelli, and Chris Henze accounted for the Tigers only run of the afternoon.

For the 27th time this season the Tribe scored four, or more, runs an inning when they struck for four in the bottom of the seventh. Junior Cullen Large and Gould started the rally with back-to-back singles, before senior Josh Smith laid down a bunt to move the runs up a base. Towson intentionally walked freshman Hunter Smith to load the bases. Sophomore Kyle Wrighte followed with an RBI single, regaining the lead for the Tribe. Ameer kept the rally by getting hit by a pitch for an RBI. Pearson followed suit with an RBI infield single. The final run of the inning came across on a wild pitch, lifting W&M to a 5-1 advantage.

The Tribe tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Back-to-back walks to Large and Gould put runners on the corners to start the rally. Josh Smith brought in the first run when he reached on fielder's choice. After an out, and a walk Ameer singled scoring Gould. The final two runs came on when two runners scored on a fielder's choice by Pearson.

Austin Clark was saddled with the loss for Towson. He tossed 6.1 innings allowing five runs on six hits. Policelli led the Tigers with three hits, and Chris Henze provided the lone RBI.

The Green and Gold conclude non-conference play as they travel to West Virginia for a three-game series. The set opens with a doubleheader on Friday, May 13 with first pitch set 4 p.m.
