Baseball Falls in Extra Innings in Game One at West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia rallied all the way back, and walked off in the 10th defeating the William & Mary baseball team in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday afternoon. With the decision, the Tribe falls to 24-24, while the Mountaineers improve to 29-19.
 
Senior Charley Gould led the Tribe in the setback, collecting a season-high four hits and three RBI. Senior Josh Smith had three hits, while freshman Hunter Smith collected a pair of hits.
 
For the 16th time this season, W&M jumped on the board in its first at bat with two runs. Sophomore Ryan Hall started the game with a single, moving to second on a walk to junior Ryder Miconi. After an out, Gould doubled down the left field line, clearing the bases and giving the Tribe a 2-0 lead.
 
A two out rally in the top of the third inning doubled the Tribe's lead. With two outs, Gould started the rally for the Green and Gold. A double from senior Josh Smith scored Gould all the way from first. Freshman Hunter Smith gave the Tribe a 4-0 advantage when he singled into right field.
 
Another two out rally provided the Tribe's fifth run of the afternoon. Gould again started the rally with his third hit of the day. Josh Smith followed by reaching on a bunt single, but an errant throw allowed Gould to get to third. Josh Smith was caught on a pickoff, but on the rundown Gould scored, before Smith was tagged out.
 
The Tribe tacked on two more runs with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. Miconi started the rally with a two-out single, moving up on a wild pitch. Sophomore Cullen Large followed with a double to center that scores Miconi. Gould knocked in his third run on his fourth hit as he followed with a single to left.
 
West Virginia jumped on the scoreboard with a homer in the bottom of the eighth inning. KC Huth started the inning by reaching on a wild pitch third strike, which was followed by a walk to Shaun Corso. The next batter Shaun Wood smacked a homer over the right centerfield wall, cutting the deficit to 7-3.
 
The Mountaineers tied the game with four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Ivan Vera reached on a fielder's choice, which was followed by a single Jackson Cramer. After an out, Marques Inman singled through the left side loading the bases, Huth provided a bases clearing double. Wood drove in his fourth run of the game when he singled tying the score.
 
WVU completed the comeback with a run in the bottom of the 10th inning. Cramer led off the inning by reaching second on a dropped third strike and an error. He later moved to third on a sac bunt. With runners on the corners, Wood singled giving the Mountaineers the 8-7 win.
 
Junior starting pitcher Nick Brown didn't factor into the decision, but pitched into the eighth inning. Sophomore Robert White was saddled with his third loss, but didn't give up an earned run.
 
Blake Smith picked up the win for WVU pitching a scoreless top of the 10th inning. Huth and Wood led the Mountianeers with three RBI, while Corso had two RBI.
 
Game two between the Tribe and Mountaineers is set to get underway in approximately 30 minutes.
