Baseball Suffers Tough Saturday Setback to UNCW

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Freshman Bodie Sheehan turned in the best outing of his young career on Saturday at Plumeri Park, but UNCW scored five runs over the final two innings to rally past the William & Mary baseball team, 7-4. Sheehan threw seven strong innings striking out eight, and the Tribe (15-15, 4-3 CAA) used a four-run sixth inning to take a 4-2 lead. UNCW (18-9, 4-2 CAA) scored four in the eighth and one in the ninth to claim its second win in the series.

Sheehan allowed only three hits and two runs over his seven innings. Offensively, redshirt freshman Kyle Wrighte led the Tribe with two hits and an RBI, while junior Tim Hoehn added an RBI.

UNCW struck first with a homer in the top of the first. Brian Mims lofted a fly ball to right field that the wind, gusting over 30 miles per hour, carried over the fence. Sheehan did stuck out the side to jump start a strong performance on the mound.

W&M threatened with a runner in scoring position in less than two outs in the second, fourth, and fifth innings, but came up short each time. In the second, Large walked and stole second with one out, but was stranded.

Hall and Gould coaxed back-to-back walks with one out in the fourth, but Alex Royalty struck out two straight to end the inning.  The Tribe threated an inning later with a lead-off single from Wrighte. He advanced to second on a sac bunt from freshman Zach Pearson, but was stranded.

Stupeienski increased UNCWs lead to 2-0 with a rocket solo home run to right field in the top of the sixth.

W&M finally got on the board with four runs in the bottom of the frame. Hall and Large worked walks around a Gould single to load the bases. Hoehn hit a hot shot to third on the first pitch of his attempt. UNCW's Daniel Stack played the ball off of his chest on a bounce, but his throw to first was errant, allowing all three runs to come around and score. Hoehn, who was credited with an RBI on the play, came around to score on a Wrighte single to center.

The Seahawks used a four-run eighth inning to retake the lead. Steven Linkous and Mims both singled in the inning and came around to score on wild pitches. Nick Fieght brought home Stupienski on a ground out to shortstop to put UNCW back in front. Casey Golden provided the final run of the frame with a towering home run to left field.

UNCW tacked on another run in the ninth thanks to a pinch-hit home run down the right field line from Andy Austin.

In the bottom of the ninth, W&M got the tying run to the plate in the former of Gould. Miconi walked with two-out, and Hall followed single through the right side. Gould clubbed a 1-0 pitch to deep center field, but Robbie Thorburn made the catch on the warning track to preserve the Seahawk victory.

The Tribe wraps up its three-game set with UNCW on Sunday, April 10. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. from Plumeri Park.
