WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary baseball team dropped a 6-1 decision in the series finale to UNCW on Sunday afternoon at Plumeri Park. With the setback, the Tribe drops to 15-16, 4-4 in Colonial Athletic Association, while the Seahawks improve to 19-9, 5-2, in league action.
For the third straight day UNCW jumped on the board first, scoring a run in the top of the first inning. Back-to-back singles Steven Linkous and Chris Mims started the game. The next batter, Gavin Stupienski skied a flyout to left, scoring the first run of the game.
A two-out rally in the top of the second inning extended the Seahawks lead. Robbie Thorburn reached a two-out single moving to second on a passed ball. Kennard McDowell lifted a bloop single into center giving UNCW a 2-0 lead.
Nick Feight extended the UNCW lead with one swing of the bat. Feight sent a towering shot over the right field fence making the score 3-0.
UNCW doubled its lead with three runs in the top of the sixth inning. A leadoff walk to McDowell followed by back-to-back singles from Linkous and Mims loaded the bases. A single by Stupienski scored two, before a sacrifice fly from Feight gave the 'Hawks a 6-0 lead.
Senior
Charley Gould provided the lone offense spark for the Tribe with a solo homer in the bottom of the eighth inning. His fourth of the season cut the deficit to 6-1.
Junior
Daniel Powers was saddled with his second loss of the season. He tossed six innings, allowing four runs on eights with two strikeouts. Senior
Mitchell Aker tossed the final two innings allowing three hits with two strikeouts.
Cory Gantz earned the win for UNCW he tossed seven innings scattering seven hits, and just the homer to Gould. He added four strikeouts in his victory. Linkous led the Seahawks with four hits in the game.
The Green and Gold conclude its five game homestand with a pair of in-state games this week. W&M will welcome Old Dominion on Tuesday, April 10, before welcoming VCU on Wednesday, April 11. Both games are set for 6 p.m. first pitches.
