WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Junior
Nick Brown and sophomore
Charlie Fletcher combined for a one-hit shutout as the William & Mary baseball team blanked Delaware for its sixth consecutive Colonial Athletic Association victory on Friday night at Plumeri Park. With the win, the Tribe evens its record to 21-21, and improves to 10-5 in CAA play, while the Blue Hens drop to 25-17, 4-9 in league action.
Brown was again sensational for eight innings for the Green and Gold. He allowed only a third inning single in his fourth victory of the season. He fanned seven Blue Hens, while he only walked three and for the second straight start an opposing runner didn't advance passed second base. The Bristow, Virginia native ran his scoreless inning streak 16.1 innings. It was the Tribe pitching staff's fifth combined shutout of the season as Fletcher got three groundouts in the ninth. It was the also the Tribe's fourth shutout during its current six-game CAA winning streak.
Offensively, sophomore
Cullen Large led the Tribe with a three hits, a pair of doubles and two RBI. Junior
Ryder Miconi, sophomore
Ryan Hall, and freshman
Hunter Smith also recorded multi-hit games for the College.
For the 13th time this season, William & Mary plated a run in the first inning with three in the bottom half. Hall led off the game with a single, moving to third on an perfectly executed hit a run by freshman
Kyle Wrighte. The next batter, Large doubled to score the first run of the game. A wild pitch allowed for Wrighte to score, before senior
Charley Gould doubled giving W&M a 3-0 advantage.
The Tribe tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Hunter Smith doubled off of the centerfield wall to start the inning, moving to third on a sacrifice bunt that classmate
Zach Pearson, who reached on a fielder's choice. A passed ball allowed for
Hunter Smith to score, before a two-out double by Large gave W&M a 5-0 lead.
For the 25th time this season the Tribe scored more than four times an inning, crossing the plate five times in the seventh inning. All nine batters came to the plate in the inning, and W&M got RBIs from
Hunter Smith and Large.
Ron Marinaccio was saddled with his third loss of the season for Delaware. He tossed 6.1 innings allowing eight runs on 11 hits, but he did strikeout eight Tribe batters. Kevin Mohollen picked up the lone Blue Hen hit of the game, and there was only one inning where more than one Delaware player reached base.
The College and Delaware conclude their series with a doubleheader tomorrow, Saturday, April 30, at Plumeri Park. Game one is set for an 11 a.m. first pitch with game two coming at 4 p.m.
