Baseball Rallies Back to Take Game, Series at Northeastern 8-5

BOSTON, Mass. – The William & Mary baseball team survived a big fifth inning from Northeastern and rallied back to win and take the Colonial Athletic Association series 8-5 in game two in Boston on Saturday afternoon. With the win the Tribe improves to 19-20, 8-5 in CAA play, while the Huskies fall to 19-18, 7-6 in league action.

Junior Ryder Miconi paced the Tribe offense with three hits and three RBI. Sophomore Cullen Large added a multi-hit and RBI day, while collecting his fifth homer of the season.

William & Mary scored the game's first two runs with a two-out rally in the top of the third inning. Freshman Kyle Wrighte reached on a two-out walk, before stealing second. The next batter, Large blasted his fifth homer of the season well over the left field wall. His 19th and 20th two-out RBIs gave the Tribe a 2-0 advantage.

The Tribe added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning. Freshman Owen Socher and sophomore Ryan Hall started the rally with back-to-back walks, before Large loaded the bases with a one-out single. The next batter, senior Charley Gould drew a walk, brining home the first run of the frame. Miconi followed with a groundout, but it was enough to move W&M's lead to 4-0.

Northeastern rallied and broke out for five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, taking the lead. A walk to Nolan Lang led off the inning, before Maxwell Burt doubled setting the table. Cam Walsh followed with a single up the middle, clearing the bases. After a fielder's choice, David Hopkins was hit by a pitch. A single up the middle by Charlie McConnell scored the third run of the frame and put runners on the corners.  A bunt single by Mason Koppens tied the score, before a single by Keith Kelly gave the Huskies their first lead with a base hit.

W&M scored twice in the top of the seventh inning, regaining the lead. Back-to-back singles from Gould and Miconi started the rally, before back-to-back walks to freshman Hunter Smith and senior Josh Smith tied the score. An infield single from freshman Zach Pearson gave the Tribe a 6-5 lead. The Huskies did turn a double to end the threat and preserve the one-run deficit.

The Green and Gold added two insurance runs in the top of the eighth inning. Hall led off the inning with a double, but the next two batters were retired. After an intentional walk to Gould, Miconi cleared the bases with a double into the left centerfield gap, pushing the lead to 8-5.

Freshman Bodie Sheehan made the start for the Green and Gold, but didn't factor into the decision. He went 4.1 innings allowing five runs on four hits, while striking out three. Senior Mitchell Aker was credited with his second win of the season. He tossed 3.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing three hits, and striking out two.

For the second straight day, senior Joseph Gaouette came on and earned the save with a scoreless ninth inning. It was the senior's eighth save of the season, and the 15th of his career, which moves him into sole possession of the school record.

Andrew Misiaszek was charged with his second loss for the Huskies. He allowed two runs on four hits with two strikeouts. Offensively, Walsh led NU with two RBI, while Koppens was the lone player with two hits.

The College goes for the sweep and concludes its eight-game road trip tomorrow, Sunday, April 24. First pitch is set for Noon.
