BOSTON, Mass. – Senior
Josh Smith provided the muscle and junior
Daniel Powers supplied more outstanding pitching as the William & Mary baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Northeastern with a 3-0 win on Sunday in Boston. With the win, the Tribe evens its record to 20-20, 9-5 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while the Huskies fall to 19-19, 7-7 in league action.
For the second straight weekend Powers helped the Tribe to a shutout his team-best sixth victory of the season. He tossed seven innings without allowing a run, scattering five hits and had four strikeouts. The Vienna, Virginia native moved his scoreless inning streak to 17.1 innings without allowing a run. The shutout was the second of the weekend, and the fourth of the season for the Tribe pitching staff.
Offensively,
Josh Smith provided the heroics with a two-run homer in the seventh and an RBI in the ninth. Senior
Charley Gould also added two hits for the College.
William & Mary finally broke through with the game's first two runs in the top of the seventh inning. Gould led off the frame with a single. After a pair of outs,
Josh Smith blasted his seventh homer of the season over the left field wall, giving the Tribe a 2-0 advantage.
Josh Smith drove in his third run of the game with an RBI in the top ninth inning. Again, Gould led off the inning with a single, before moving to second on a balk with two outs.
Josh Smith made the Huskies pay with his single into left, which gave W&M a 3-0 lead.
The Tribe's bullpen pitched the final two innings scoreless to preserve the win. Sophomores
Charlie Fletcher and
Robert White pitched the final two innings, allowing one base runner.
Robert White was credited with his second save of the season.
Dustin Hunt was charged with the loss for the Huskies. He allowed two runs on three hits, while he fanned eight batters. Offensively, McConnell and Josh Treff led the Huskie attack with two hits.
The Green and Gold returns home for a seven-game homestand and conclude mid-week play when they host Liberty on Wednesday, April 27. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
