WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Senior
Josh Smith's bat came alive has he had four hits, two homers, and the walk-off homer as the William & Mary baseball team picked up a 10-9 victory to even the series against Georgetown on Saturday afternoon at Plumeri Park. With the decision the Tribe improves 13-12, while the Hoyas fall to 13-15.
Josh Smith had four hits, while he added three RBI to lead the offense. Sophomore
Ryan Hall added three hits and two RBI, while junior
Ryder Miconi and senior
Charley Gould each had two hits.
Georgetown broke the ice with a run in the top of the third inning. With one out, Beau Hall walked moving to second on an infield single from Austin Shirley. The next batter Michael DeRenzi singled into right field, giving the Hoyas a 1-0 lead.
The Tribe tied the score in the bottom of the fourth inning. Back-to-back singles from
Ryan Hall and Gould, which was followed by a walk to
Cullen Large loading the bases. The next batter, freshman
Zach Pearson lined out to right, but it was enough to score
Ryan Hall and tie the score 1-1.
GU responded with two runs of its own in the top of the fifth on a homer. With one out, Beau Hall walked, and moved to second on a stolen base. After an out, DeRenzi blasted a homer over the right field wall, giving the Hoyas a 3-1 advantage.
W&M rallied right back and took its first lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman
Matthew Keane legged out an infield single to start the rally. After an out, Miconi doubled into the right centerfield gap scoring Keane all the way from first.
Ryan Hall followed with a single that score Miconi and tied the score. Gould provided the third straight hit of the inning, a double down the left field line, gave W&M its first lead of the game at 4-3.
Once again the Hoyas came right back and took the lead, all with two outs. Dante Ricciardi was hit by a pitch, before moving to third on a failed pick off attempt. The next batter Beau Hall walked putting runners on the corners. Shirley singled into left field tying the score. The Hoyas regained the lead when a wild pitch on strike three allowed for the second run of the inning to score. With the bases loaded, Eric Garza doubled off of the left field wall clearing the bases and giving GU the biggest lead of the game at 8-4.
The Green and Gold answered with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Wrighte started the inning by reaching second on error, before moving to third on a wild pitch. An infield single by
Josh Smith brought him around. After a double play, a walk from Miconi put runners on first and second.
Ryan Hall singled scoring the second run of the frame. The Tribe tied the score when Gould reached on an error, scoring two and tying the game at 8-8.
Josh Smith gave the Tribe the lead back with a homer in the bottom of the seventh inning. The senior's third homer of the season, a towering line drive over the left field wall, gave W&M a 9-8 lead.
The Hoyas rallied for a run in the top of the ninth inning with two outs. A walk to Charlie Dillion started the rally, before he moved to second on a stolen base. The next batter, Jake Bernstein singled passed diving Large, tying the score at 9-9.
With one out in the bottom of the ninth,
Josh Smith played the hero. He blasted his second homer of the game and fourth of the season over the centerfield wall, lifting the Tribe to a 10-9 victory.
Sophomore
Robert White was credited with his first win of the season getting the final out of the top of the ninth inning. He worked out of a bases loaded jam to preserve the tie.
Jake Cushing was saddled with the loss he tossed 2.2 innings allowing two runs on four hits. Shirley led the Hoya offense with three hits, while DeRenzi and Garza each had two.
The series concludes tomorrow, Sunday, April 3, with the rubber game. First pitch between the Tribe and the Hoyas is set for 1 p.m.
