Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Tribe Lax Edged by Winthrop, 10-9

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (March 6, 2016)—The William & Mary lacrosse team was edged by Winthrop, 10-9, at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field on Sunday afternoon.

Although W&M (2-3) utilized a 6-0 run midway through the contest and held the Eagles (7-0) scoreless for a stretch of more than 20 minutes, Winthrop closed out the game by scoring four of the final five goals en route to keeping its perfect record intact.

Junior Shannon Quinn led the Tribe with three goals, three ground balls and two caused turnovers, while junior Lindsey Jenks provide a pair of goals and a team-high four draw controls.

The closely contested matchup featured a number of big swings, as WU answered Quinn's game-opening goal (29:24) with a 6-1 run to build a four-goal advantage with less than six minutes remaining in the first half.

W&M responded with a 6-0 run and held the Eagles scoreless for a span of more than 20 minutes that spanned both halves to take an 8-6 lead with 18:45 remaining.

However, the Winthrop swung the game back in its favor with a 4-0 run that lasted until sophomore Abby Corkum found the back of the cage with 2:54 remaining. W&M had multiple possessions down the stretch but managed just one shot – a free position attempt by Corkum that was saved by Winthrop's Alaina Girani.

The College dominated the draws, 15-6, but committed five more turnovers than the Eagles (23-18), who were whistled for 56 fouls (compared to W&M's 33). The ground balls were even with 25 apiece.

Senior Catherine Shaughnessy led the Tribe defensively with two caused turnovers and three ground balls, while junior goalie Alex Lista posted nine saves.

Winthrop utilized a balanced attack, as a quartet of players totaled two goals apiece.

The Tribe will return to action when it hosts Old Dominion on Thursday at noon. It will mark the second of four consecutive home games for W&M.
