WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (March 19, 2016)—The William & Mary lacrosse team earned a thrilling 10-9 overtime victory against Virginia Tech at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Tribe (4-4) rallied back from a 5-0 first-half deficit, and junior
Shannon Quinn provided the game-winning goal with 5.8 seconds remaining in the initial overtime period.
Quinn led W&M with three goals and totaled a team-high three draw controls, while sophomores
Abby Corkum and
Meaghan Brophy both found the back of the net twice apiece.
Senior goalie
Meredith Crizer posted an outstanding performance off the bench and recorded 10 saves while allowing just six goals. Additionally, she provided a huge save in the waning seconds of regulation to help send the contest into overtime.
Junior
Abby Junior also came up big defensively and contributed a team-high three caused turnovers.
Although VT (5-7) started the game with five unanswered goals, the College gradually chipped away at the margin and trailed by just two, 5-7, at halftime. En route to mounting the comeback, W&M's defense allowed just two goals in the final 18 minutes of the opening half.
While the Hokies scored the first two goals of the second stanza, the Tribe held VT scoreless during the remainder of the contest.
Brophy tallied two of W&M's final four scores in regulation, while sophomore
McKinley Wade registered the game-tying goal on a free position opportunity with 7:42 remaining.
Although VT won the draw following Wade's score and maintained possession until the waning seconds of regulation, Crizer came up with a huge save on a shot by Tristan McGinley to help preserve the tie.
Wade secured the draw control in overtime, and following a Tribe timeout to set the offense, Quinn found the back of the cage with just 5.8 remaining on the clock.
Nearly every statistical category was close, as W&M outshot VT, 26-25, while both teams totaled 12 ground balls. The Hokies held a narrow edge in draw controls, 12-9.
Four different players – McGinley, Jessi Thon, Meghan Macera and Kristine Loscalzo – contributed two goals apiece for VT.
The Tribe will return to action when it plays at Richmond next Wednesday.
