Offense Leads Way in 10-5 Conference Opening Win at Elon

ELON, N.C. – The William & Mary baseball team scored four runs in the first inning and scored key runs late as they picked up a 10-5 Colonial Athletic Association victory at Elon on Friday afternoon. With the victory the Tribe improves to 8-10, 1-0 in CAA play, while the Phoenix drop to 8-10, 0-1 in league action.
 
As a team, the Tribe collected 14 hits, led by five players with multiple hit games, including the first four in the order. Junior Ryder Miconi led the charge with a 3-for-4 day adding two RBI and two RBI. Senior Charley Gould added a pair of hits and four RBI, while junior Charles Ameer, sophomore Ryan Hall, and freshman Kyle Wrighte also had multi-hit games.
 
For the eighth time this season, William & Mary scored in the first inning bringing across four in the top half of the frame. Ameer led of the inning with a single, moving to second on a walk to Miconi. The next batter, Hall followed with a double down the left line that broke open the scoring. The rally continued as Gould smashed a homer over the right centerfield wall. His first homer of the season gave W&M a 4-0 lead.
 
The Tribe took advantage of an Elon miscue in the top of the third inning, adding another run. Miconi led off the inning with a single down the left field line, moving around the bases on a pair of wild pitches. An error on a dropped fly ball gave W&M a 5-0 advantage.
 
Again in the fourth the Tribe tacked on a run. Back-to-back singles from Wrighte and Ameer started the rally. After an out, Miconi shot a single through the left side, making the score 6-0.
 
For the third consecutive inning the Tribe added a run in the top of the fifth, this time plating two. Both Gould and sophomore Cullen Large were hit by pitches, before freshman Nick Butts singled, loading the bases. A senior Josh Smith groundout, and a passed ball accounted for the Tribe scoring, giving W&M a commanding 8-0 lead.
 
Elon broke through with a pair of runs in the home half of the fifth inning. Liam O'Regan doubled down the left field line. Ryne Orgen followed suit with a triple scoring the first Phoenix run. After two outs, Danny Lynch singled up the middle cutting the deficit to 8-2.
 
Again the Phoenix scored two in the home half of the sixth. Will Nance started the offense with a single, moving to second a wild pitch. After an out, Kory Schumate singled putting runners on the corners. With two outs, Ogren singled, before a strikeout and a wild pitch allowed for the second run to score.
 
The Tribe tacked on another run in the top of the seventh inning. Again Hunter Smith and Ameer were hit by pitches setting up the middle of the lineup. This time, Miconi singled up the middle extending the lead back to 9-4.
 
Elon got the run right back in the bottom of the seventh. A double by Tyler McVicar started the inning, before Austin Leeny reached on an error that cut the lead to 9-5.
 
W&M added an insurance run in the top of the ninth. Josh Smith sparked the rally with a one-out double. With two-outs, Wrighte beat out an infield single, which scored Josh Smith, giving the Tribe a 10-5 lead.
 
Junior Daniel Powers picked up his second win of the season tossing 5.2 innings. He allowed four runs on nine hits with two strikeouts. Sophomore Robert White pitched the final two innings scoreless without allowing a hit, and struck out five.
 
Jordan Barrett was charged with his first loss of the season. He went 3.2 allowing six runs and eight. Ogren, Lynch, McVicar, and O'Regan all had two hits, while Ogren had two RBI.
 
The College and the Phoenix continue the series tomorrow, Saturday, March 19, at 2 p.m. The three-game set concludes on Sunday, March 20 at 1:30 p.m.
