WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (Feb. 28, 2016)—The William & Mary lacrosse team earned an exciting 15-14 comeback victory in its home opener at Martin Family Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Tribe (2-1) rallied back from a late two-goal deficit by rattling off three unanswered scores in the final 3:42 to post the thrilling win. Senior
Zoe Boger provided the game-winner off an assist from sophomore
Danielle Palmucci with just 0:38 remaining.
The exciting 3-0 closing stretch answered a 6-1 run by Oregon (2-1) that gave the Ducks a 14-12 advantage late in the contest.
Junior
Shannon Quinn led W&M with four goals, while sophomore
Abby Corkum (4g) and Palmucci (4a) also came up big offensively. In all, eight different Tribe players contributed goals as part of a balanced attack.
Sophomore
Maryann Skubal and Boger combined for nine draws and finished the contest with five and four, respectively, en route to helping the College earn a 17-14 edge in the statistical category.
Defensively, junior
Abby Junior led W&M with three caused turnovers and four ground balls.
The first half was closely contested, as neither team was able to build a margin greater than two goals during the opening 30 minutes. The Ducks posted a pair of two-goal leads (3-1, 5-3), but the Tribe responded both times and the teams went to the locker room tied at 7-7.
Although the College opened the second half by scoring four of the first five goals to take an 11-8 advantage with 23:41 remaining, Oregon answered with a 6-1 run that covered nearly a 20-minute span before the Tribe's late comeback.
In addition to Boger's game-winning goal, Corkum (3:42) and Quinn (1:29) also found the back of the cage during the pivotal final stretch.
Holly Johnson led Oregon with five goals, while Cambi Cukar (5a) Shannon Williams (3g, 1a) also contributed to the Ducks' attack.
The Tribe will return to action when it plays at No. 7 Virginia on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
