Alexandra Masaquel and
Marlena Tremba were each in double-figures as the William & Mary women's basketball team cruised to its fifth straight victory with a 63-50 triumph against Dartmouth Thursday night in Kaplan Arena. With the victory, the Tribe ups its record to 5-1, while the Big Green drop to 2-4.
Tremba did all of her damage in the first half as she scored a game-high 16 points, on 5-of-9 from the floor and 4-of-6 from 3-point land, adding a pair of rebounds and assists. Masaquel stole the show in the second half finishing the game with a season-high 14 points, six rebounds, and two helpers. Junior
Jenna Green chipped in seven points, five boards, four assists, and two thefts.
Down 4-2 early, Dartmouth used a 6-2 run to build its largest lead of the game in the first quarter. Isalys Quinones opened the run with a traditional 3-point play, before Olivia Smith hit a jumper. Following a pair of Tremba free throws, Annie McKenna hit a trey, making it 10-6 with 3:49 to play.
W&M responded with 9-2 run of its own, building a 17-12 lead at the end of a quarter of play. Masaquel sparked the run with a jumper, before a steal and a triple from senior
Latrice Hunter gave the Tribe the lead. Tremba knocked down a 3-pointer of her own, before Dartmouth hit two free throws. W&M held for the final shot of the period, which resulted in another Tremba triple.
Dartmouth responded to open the second quarter with 5-2 run tying the score with 7:55 left in the half. Olivia Smith had a pair of free throws to open the run, which were followed by a sophomore
Bianca Boggs layup. McKenna knocked down another 3-pointer, which knotted the game at 21-21.
Again the Tribe answered this time with an extended 15-5 run, building a 36-26 lead at the intermission. Tremba hit a 3-pointer, before Boggs got a steal and a layup for a quick 5-0 burst. Following a Big Green bucket, Masaquel knocked down a top-of-the-key jumper, Tremba connected on another 3-pointer, and Green hit a trey as well as W&M extended its lead into double-figures for the first time. Dartmouth answered one of the triples, before Masaquel hit a jumper, ending the period
Leading 46-32, the Tribe used a 9-0 run closing the third quarter and opening the fourth, which all but put the game away. Senior
Kasey Curtis opened the run with a jumper, which was matched by one by Masaquel, before two free throws from Boggs ended the quarter. Curtis scored the first three points of the fourth stanza, before freshman
Victoria Reynolds hit jumper making it 57-32 with 8:29 left.
Dartmouth scored the final 12 points of the game, cutting the final score to 63-50. Andi Norman led the spurt with five points, while Kate Letkewicz chipped in four points.
The Tribe had strong efforts off its bench by a trio players. Hunter provided a spark in the beginning, finishing the night with three points, two rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Curtis added a season-high five points, four rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Freshman
Nari Garner connected on two, 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and added a rebound.
Again W&M's defense was a story line, holding its third straight opponent and the four of the last five to 50 points or less. The Tribe forced, at least, 20 turnovers for the second straight game on 11 steals. Reynolds had a game-high three thefts, while Boggs, Green, and Hunter each had two.
Letkewicz and Emily Slagle led Dartmouth with 11 points apiece. Letkewicz added four rebounds, a block and two steals, while Slagle had two rebounds, an assists, and two steals. McKeena added eight points and an assist for the Big Green.
The Green and Gold plays its final game, before a 12-day exam break as they travel to American on Saturday, Dec. 3. The matinee tips off at 2 p.m.
