Fourth Quarter Rally Lifts Women's Basketball at American 48-34

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The William & Mary women's basketball team outscored American 18-9 in the fourth quarter as the Tribe picked up its sixth straight consecutive victory with a 48-34 win at American on Saturday afternoon. The Green and Gold improves to 6-1 on the season, while the Eagles fall to 2-5.

Senior Alexandra Masaquel scored a season-high 15 points and added eight rebounds, and two steals, leading the Tribe offensively. Sophomore Bianca Boggs added eight points, three boards, and two steals, while freshman Victoria Reynolds finished with eight points, six boards, an assist, and two steals.

Tied 4-4, W&M closed the first quarter and opened the second quarter on an 8-0 run, building its largest lead of the first half at 12-4. Masaquel opened the spurt with a free throw, before burring her first 3-pointer of the season. Junior Jenna Green hit a layup right before the end of the quarter, and then Masaquel opened the second with a layup.

American answered with a quick 6-2 run to bring the score back to a four-point game. Emily Kinneston hit a jumper, but that was matched by a Reynolds basket. The Eagles scored the next four points on a jumper by Cecily Carl and a Lauren Crisler layup.

The Tribe scored the next four points and held an 18-12 lead at the break. It was a cold shooting first half for the Green and Gold, which hit just 6-of-25 from the floor (24-percent) and 1-of-6 (16.7-percent) from deep.

AU opened the second half with a 12-3 run taking its only lead of the game. Crisler opened the run with two free throws, but they were answered by Masaquel bucket. Kinneston followed with a layup, before Boggs added a free throw. The Eagles scored the next eight points on a triple by Kaitlin Lewis, a jumper Emily Kinneston, and a 3-pointer from Carl. The run gave American a 23-21 lead.

W&M responded with nine straight points to regain the lead for good. Two free throws from Boggs tied the score, before Reynolds hit a layup, Boggs added a triple, and a senior Latrice Hunter hit layup.

Leading 30-25, the Tribe opened the fourth with a 14-2 run to put the game away. W&M scored the first 10 points of the quarter starting with back-to-back layups from Masaquel and Rendle, a pair of free throws from Reynolds, a layup from Gaumont and a free throw from Green. After an Eagle basket, senior Marlena Tremba connected on four straight from the line, building to the largest lead of the game at 44-27 with 3:07 left.

For the third consecutive game, the Tribe forced 20, or more turnovers, forcing the Eagles into 22 turnovers on 13 steals. Masaquel, Rendle, Boggs, Tremba, and Reynolds all finished with a pair of steals.

Again W&M limited its fourth straight opponent to 50 points, or less, and its fifth during the six game winning streak. It was just the 11th time since 1975 that the Tribe has held an opponent to less than 35 points. The last time W&M did it was in 2006 when they held Longwood to 26 points.

It was also the Tribe's third consecutive road win to start the season, which is just the third time in school history that W&M has won its first three true road games. The last time it happened was to the start the 1976-77 season.

Following a 12-day layoff for exams, W&M returns to action as it concludes its non-conference road schedule at Norfolk State on Thursday, Dec. 15. Tipoff between the Tribe and Spartans is set for 7 p.m.
