WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary women's basketball team opened the game with an 11-0 run and never looked back in an 82-48 thumping of Delaware State on Monday night inside of Kaplan Arena. The Tribe
won its fourth straight and improves to 4-1, while the Hornets fall to 1-5.
Senior
Marlena Tremba scored a game-high 22 points on 8-of-12 from the floor and 5-of-8 from behind the arc. The senior added a rebound, two assists, in three steals in her seventh consecutive double-digit performance. Sophomore
Bianca Boggs finished the night with 16 points, four boards, two blocks, and a steal.
Senior Alexandra Masaquel as well as juniors
Jenna Green and
Abby Rendle all finished with eight points.
W&M opened the game clicking on all cylinders jumping out to an 11-0 run in the game's first 5:30 minutes. Masaquel sandwiched a pair of baskets around a Green jumper, sparking the run. Rendle hit a layup, before a Tremba triple ended the opening spurt.
Trailing by 12 points with 1:05 left in the first quarter, Delaware State used an 8-2 spurt to close the stanza and open the second. A pair of Aaliyah Davis free throws followed by a NaJai Pollard layup ended the opening period. A Dayanni Cochran jumper opened the second quarter, but the Tribe answered. Davis connected on a jumper to make the score 20-14 with 7:30 left in the half, which was the closest the Hornets came the rest of the way.
The Tribe closed the half with an 11-2 run to build its largest lead of the first 20 minutes at 16. Boggs canned a trey to spark the run, before Green added a layup in transition. After two free throws from the guest, Boggs hit another triple and added a free throw, before Green hit a jumper right before the horn sounded, pushing the advantage to 34-18 at the break.
W&M put the game away with an 8-0 run, in just 40 seconds, midway through the third quarter. After DSU completed a traditional 3-point play, Tremba sandwiched a 3-pointer and a traditional 3-point play around a jumper from Green. The spurt pushed the Tribe out to a 51-30 lead.
The College extended its lead to as many as 38 points, before settling for an 82-48 victory. The 82 points were the most since the Tribe dropped 84 on College of Charleston on Feb. 26, 2015. W&M's defense still continues to impress as the Tribe limited its third opponent in the last four games to fewer than 50 points.
Additionally, W&M forced a season-high 26 turnovers on 13 steals, while adding eight blocked shots. Green, Tremba, and freshman
Victoria Reynolds had three steals, while Rendle had a season-high four rejections.
The Tribe shot a season-high 60-percent (34-of-67) from the field in the victory. The 34 made buckets are tied for ninth best in school history. W&M also connected on a season-high nine 3-pointers, led by Tremba with five. Her 5-for-8 from distance was the sixth best single-game percentage at 62.5-percent.
Pollard led the Hornets with a double-double on 15 points and 11 rebounds. She added five assists, a block, playing 39 minutes. Davis was also in double-figures for the Hornets with 11 points, while adding eight boards, two assists, and a steal.
The Green and Gold continues its stretch of three games in six days as it welcomes Dartmouth to Kaplan Arena on Thursday, Dec. 1. Tip time between the Tribe and the Big Green is set 7 p.m.
